CONWAY, S.C.- Appalachian State University women's tennis was unable to hang with Coastal Carolina Saturday morning in the Mountaineer's season-openeing match, as the Apps fell 7-0 to the Chanticleers. With the loss, ASU drops to 0-1 on the young season while CCU improves to 1-0.
The match got off to a shaky start as Appalachian was defeated in all three doubles matches.
At the number one doubles spot, the duo of Olivia Stannard and Ellie Linsell fell 8-6 to Lexi Bolesky and Miki Bunea, while Blakeley Bean and Gisela Fernandez suffered an 8-4 loss at the number two doubles position.
The team of Laura Janke and Jennifer Ansari rounded out doubles action, losing 8-0 to their competition.
Things did not get much easier for the Black and Gold, as Coastal Carolina defeated ASU in all six singles matches as well.
Despite a strong effort, Linsell came up just short to Bolesky at the number one singles spot, falling in three tough sets, 6-3, 1-6, 1-6. Ansari lost to her opponent as well, losing in two sets at the number two position.
Caroline Mauch, Gisela Fernandez and Bean were all handed losses as well at the number three, four and five spots, while Janke capped off singles action, losing 0-6, 0-6 to Mary Hill.
With a quick turnaround, Appalachian returns to action Sunday January 24, traveling to Greensboro, N.C. to take on NC A&T with the match slated to begin at Noon.
