CHARLOTTE, N.C. - Winthrop scored two goals in 22 seconds to come from behind and beat Appalachian State University men's soccer Friday afternoon 3-2 in Charlotte.
For the third time since 2008, ASU started the scoring with the help of an own goal but were unable to come away with the victory. The Mountaineers grabbed the lead in the 7th minute when Winthrop headed the ball into the back of their own goal.
ASU increased the lead to two when Nate Latigue put home a cross pass from the right side from Arie Muniz just seven minutes later.
Despite being outshot 8-3 in the first half, ASU held the two goal lead until Cameron Alksnis scored in the 33rd minute off a header.
Matt Lacey tied the score at two in the 80th minute off an assist from Said Abdi. The Eagles took the lead just 22 seconds later when Adam Skonicki scored off a deflected shot to give Winthrop the 3-2 lead.
Appalachian held Matthew Skonicki, the fourth leading scorer in the NCAA, in check, but were outshot 15-7 in the defeat.
Collin Taylor made three saves in goal while Enrique Miranda made two saves for Winthrop.
The Mountaineers take on Cal St. Bakersfield on Sunday at 11 a.m.
