BOONE, N.C. — Appalachian State University announced on Thursday that five former Mountaineer standouts have been selected for induction into the ASU Athletics Hall of Fame. The Hall's 2009 class, which will be inducted in conjunction with Appalachian's Sept. 26 football contest versus Samford, includes
Lynette Gardin-Johnson (women's track and field — 1988-92),
Corey Hall (football — 1997-2000),
Josh Jeffries (football —1999-2002),
Tyson Patterson (men's basketball —1996-2000) and
Mark Royals (football — 1983-85).
Additionally, longtime supporter
F. P. “Bodie” Bodenheimer, Jr. is the recipient of ASU athletics' 2009 Special Service Award.
All five honorees will be recognized at Appalachian athletics' Hall of Fame Induction Breakfast on Sept. 26 at 9 a.m. at the Broyhill Inn and Conference Center. Reservations can be made by contacting Lynda Young at (828) 262-3108 or

LYNETTE GARDIN-JOHNSON (Women's Track and Field — 1988-92): An eight-time all-Southern Conference honoree, earning indoor and outdoor honors all four years of her collegiate career ... still holds six school records — indoor 300m (40.29), indoor 400m (56.34), indoor mile relay (3:57.47), indoor sprint medley — 400-200-200-800 (4:14.9), outdoor 4x100m (44.73) and outdoor 4x200m (1:36.69) ... claimed all-America recognition as part of 1989 400m relay team ... won 10 Southern Conference championships individually ... helped lead all eight of her ASU teams to SoCon team titles (indoor and outdoor, 1989-92).
COREY HALL (Football — 1997-2000): A four-year letterwinner at defensive back for the Mountaineers ... two-time first-team all-American (1999, 2000) ... two-time first-team all-Southern Conference honoree (1999, 2000) ... finalist for the 2000 Buck Buchanan Award ... two-time SoCon Defensive Player of the Week ... ranks sixth in ASU history with 13 career interceptions ... tied for team lead with five INTs in 1999 ... helped lead Mountaineers to 1999 SoCon championship ... starred in ASU's 17-16 win over No. 1 Georgia Southern in 1999 with two interceptions, including one as time expired that sealed just the second win over a top-ranked team in program history ... served as team captain in 2000 ... selected by Atlanta Falcons in the seventh round (215th overall) of the 2001 National Football Leage Draft ... was a member of the Falcons in '01.
JOSH JEFFRIES (Football — 1999-2002): One of the most accomplished of Appalachian's long line of standout defensive ends ... two-time consensus first-team All-American (2001, 2002) ... three-time all-Southern Conference honoree (2000-02) ... 2002 SoCon Defensive Player of the Year (coaches and media) ... three-time national Defensive Player of the Week ... four-time SoCon Defensive Player of the Week ... member of ASU's 75th-Anniversary Team (selected in 2003) ... still holds three ASU records — career sacks (36.5), career quarterback hurries (114) and single-season quarterback hurries (43 in 2000 and 2001) ... led ASU in quarterback hurries three times (2000-02) and sacks (2000, 2001) and tackles for loss (2001, 2002) twice ... intercepted Furman's last-second two-point conversion attempt, which he lateralled to Derrick Black, who returned it for two ASU points in the Mountaineers' legendary 16-15 “Miracle on the Mountain” win over the Paladins in 2002 ... played professionally for the Los Angeles Avengers of the Arena Football League from 2004-08.
TYSON PATTERSON (Men's Basketball — 1996-2000): The undisputed leader of perhaps the finest four-year span in ASU's hardwood history ... point guard led ASU to just the second NCAA Tournament berth in school history in 2000 ... guided ASU to three-straight Southern Conference North Division championships (1998-2000) ... 2000 SoCon Player of the Year (14.4 ppg, 6.8 apg) and Tournament MVP (22.7 ppg, 54.2 FG pct.) ... two-time all-SoCon honoree (1999, 2000) ... three-time all-SoCon Tournament selection (1998-2000) ... two-time SoCon Player of the Week ... ASU was 79-39, including 47-14 in SoCon play, in his four seasons ... still holds eight school records — career assists (638), single-season assists (218 in 1999-2000), single-season steals (87 in 1999-2000), single-game assists (14 vs. Lees-McRae in 1999-2000), single-game field-goal percentage (12-for-12 vs. Western Carolina in 1999-2000) and single-game three-point field-goal percentage (12-for-12 vs. Western Carolina in 1999-2000), points in a SoCon Tournament (68 in 2000) and field goals in a SoCon Tournament (26 in 2000) ... 12-for-12 performance from the field vs. Western Carolina in 2000 is also tied for the top single-game field-goal percentage in SoCon history ... led team in assists and steals for three-straight seasons (1998-2000).
MARK ROYALS (Football — 1983-85): Served as the starting punter each of his three seasons at ASU ... earned all-Southern Conference recognition as a sophomore (1983) ... still holds school records for punt attempts in a game (13 vs. The Citadel in 1985) and season (85 in 1984) and punting yards in a season (3,529 in 1984) ... had at least 70 punt attempts, 3,000 punting yards and a 41-yards-per-punt average in each of his three seasons as a Mountaineer ... ranks third in school history in career punt attempts (230) and punting yards (9,670) and fifth in punting average (41.9 ypp) ... signed with the Philadephia Eagles as a free agent in 1986 and enjoyed a successful 16-season NFL career with eight teams — Philadephia, St. Louis Cardinals, Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Pittsburgh Steelers, Detroit Lions, New Orleans Saints, Miami Dolphins and Jacksonville Jaguars ... led the NFL in punting with a 45.9-yard average for New Orleans in 1997.
F. P. “BODIE” BODENHEIMER, JR.: ASU alumnus joined the University community in 1949 after having served in the U.S. Navy ... upon graduation from ASU, started his professional career as a high school teacher and coach ... in 1958, he began his career with First Citizens Bank and Trust, where he moved up the ranks to become President of the First Citizens Bank and Trust Company in Raleigh, N.C. ... has served on numerous boards on the ASU campus as well as on the Board of Governors of the University System in North Carolina ... has also served as chair of the Early Childhood Development Center in Franklin and a board member of the Mountain Area Child and Family Center.
