Softball Looks to Capture First SoCon Crown

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. - Appalachian State University softball won the most Southern Conference games in school history this year and looks to add to at as they look for their first Southern Conference tournament championship.  The Mountaineers' quest for their first championship begins Wednesday May 6 against UNC Greensboro starting at 2 p.m. at Chattanooga's Jim Frost Stadium.

Appalachian comes into the tournament at 25-27 overall and 14-9 in the SoCon.  UNC Greensboro is 24-31 overall and 9-12 in Southern Conference play.

About the Mountaineers

Appalachian has broken or tied 35 school records this season and is on the verge of breaking several more.  Katie Boyd leads the charge by breaking eight school records including three SoCon records while Kayla Richardson has set four records.  As a team Appalachian has set nine single-season records starting with the 14 SoCon wins with 14, followed by home runs (35), runs scored (235), RBI (202), walks (178), sacrifice flies (10), slugging percentage, on base percentage and complete games (33).

Boyd leads the team with a .389 batting average while Sarah Rappe is second with a .295 average.  Freshman Michelle Lighton broke Boyd's freshman RBI record with 32 and is tied for second on the team with five homers, Morgan Price has five homers as well.

Megan Rembielak is third on the team in average, runs and hits, and is one of six Mountaineers to start all 52 games.

About the Spartans

Kaitlin Merkt leads UNC Greensboro with a .333 average and six homers.  Lyndsay Mouse gives the Spartans' speed with 14 stolen bases.

Hannah Angel leads the pitching staff with a 13-12 record and a 2.54 ERA.

With a win, Appalachian will play the winner of the Samford versus College of Charleston game on Thursday May 7 at 3 p.m. 

The construction on the main parking lot behind Frost Stadium will not be completed by the tournament.  UTC has made arrangements for 4 vans to provide a free shuttle service for fans.  Fans are encouraged to park at Engel Stadium (historic baseball stadium a couple of blocks from Frost Stadium) and ride the free van shuttle to Frost Stadium.  Engel Stadium is located at 1130 E. 3rd Street.

To Engel Stadium from Frost Stadium:

Exit Warner Park by turning RIGHT onto McCallie Avenue;

Go over railroad bridge;

Turn RIGHT onto O'Neal Street;

Engel Stadium will be on the right   

 

To Engel Stadium from downtown Chattanooga/Nashville/Birmingham:

I-24 East to US 27 North;

Take 4th Street Exit (Exit 1-C);

Follow E. 4th Street;

E 4th Street will turn into E. 3rd Street;   

Turn RIGHT onto O'Neil Street  

Engel Stadium will be on your left

 

To Engel Stadium from Hamilton Place Mall area/Knoxville/Atlanta.

Take I-24 West;

Take 4th Avenue Exit and turn RIGHT at bottom of exit

Turn LEFT onto 23rd Street;

Turn RIGHT onto Holtzclaw Avenue;

Turn LEFT onto McCallie Avenue

Turn RIGHT onto O'Neal Street;
