BLACKSBURG, Va. -Appalachian State University softball scored two runs in the top of the seventh to tie the game, but Virginia Tech scored a run in the bottom half of the inning to beat the Mountaineers 7-6 Tuesday night in Blacksburg.
Appalachian (25-26) tied the score in the seventh on a Morgan Price sacrifice fly and a two-out Lindsay Whitlock single, but Erin Ota drove in Kristin Graham with a single up the middle for the winning run.
Virginia Tech (24-25) had taken a 6-4 lead in the bottom of the fifth with two unearned runs after Appalachian tied the game at four.
With a walk in the first inning, Katie Boyd broke the Southern Conference single-season record with her 60th walk of the season. The record was previously held by Chattanooga's Leslie Barron who set the record in 2004. Boyd walked twice more in the game and scored her SoCon leading 44th run of the season
Virginia Tech grabbed the first lead of the game, scoring a run in the bottom of the first. Jenna Rhodes led off with an infield single and stole second. She moved to third on an Ota ground out and scored on a wild pitch.
The Hokies added two more runs in the second when Rhodes drove in a run on a bunt single and pinch runner Alicia Field scored from third on a throwing error.
The Mountaineers got on the board in the fourth. Brittany Gaston led off the inning with a bunt single, stole second, stole third and and scored on an throwing error by the catcher.
Virginia Tech tacked scored again in the fourth when Charisse Mariconda hit a sacrifice fly to score Rhodes.
Appalachian came back and tied the game with three runs in the top of the fifth. Andrea McIntyre led off with a double to right center and scored on a single by Sarah Rappe. After a sacrifice by Megan Rembielak and an intentional walk to Boyd, Michelle Lighton drove in Rappe with an RBI ground out and Gaston came up with a two-out single to drive in Boyd from second.
Gaston had three hits and stole three bases for ASU while McIntyre had two. Rhodes and Ota had three hits apiece for the Hokies.
Kayla Richardson was the touch luck loser for the Mountaineers, giving up four runs, just one earned with two strikeouts. Kenzie Roark picked up her 19th win of the season giving up six runs, five earned with eight strikeouts.
The Mountaineers end the regular-season on Sunday with a single game at North Carolina State at 1 p.m.
