ELON, N.C.- Appalachian State University women's tennis was ousted by Chattanooga in the opening match of the SoCon Tournament Thursday afternoon, as the Apps were unable to hang with the Mocs dropping a 4-2 decision.
The Mountaineers started the match off strong, winning two out of three matches in doubles play.
At the number one doubles spot the duo of Olivia Stannard and Gisela Fernandez were unable to hang with Emily Hangstefer and Grace Robinette as they fell 8-3.
Lindsay King and Blakeley Bean knotted the doubles score at one all when they defeated their opponents 8-2 at the number two spot. Laura Janke and Amanda Cash were victorious as well, winning 8-5 at the number three spot.
Despite the early 1-0 advantage, the Mocs came out strong in singles play and went up three to zero.
Cash fell at the number one spot, losing 6-3, 6-1 while Heather Prior was defeated by Brianna Wishing at the number five spot in two sets 6-2, 6-4. Bean was also unable to earn a win at the four spot, falling to Anne Green 6-1, 6-2.
Junior Caroline Mauch earned Appalachian's lone win in singles action as she was victorious over Charlotte Bossy, easily winning 6-3, 6-3 to make the match score 3-2.
Despite the effort, King lost at the number two spots in three tough sets, 6-3, 3-6, 2-6 to give Chattanooga the 4-2 win.
The Apps close out the 2009 season with a 9-16 overall record, including a 3-8 mark in SoCon play and graduate two seniors, Lindsay King and Anna Cotten.
