JACKSONVILLE, FLA.- Appalachian State University men's tennis won its sixth match of the 2009 season Monday afternoon, as the Mountaineers defeated the Mercer Bears in Jacksonville, Fla., winning 6-1. With the win ASU improves to 6-3 on the season, while Mercer drops to 4-5.
Appalachian began the match on a strong note, as the Apps swept through doubles action.
At the number one doubles spot, the team of Bobby Lake and Lee Floyd downed their opponents, handily winning 8-2. Trent Constance and Peter Jacobs also defeated their competition winning 8-4 at the number two doubles spot, while the duo of Britton Webb and Phillip Kloc eeked out an 8-6 win over Matthew Poleon and Justin Wimpee at the number three doubles spot.
ASU was solid in singles play as well, as the Black and Gold was victorious in five of six matches.
Lake was victorious over Wimpee in number one singles play, winning in two straight sets, 6-0, 6-3 and Jacobs and Floyd were both winners at the number three and four spots, picking up 6-2, 6-3 and 6-0, 6-2 victories. 
Constance dropped a tough match at the number two position, falling in two sets, but Kloc and Alain Humblet ended the afternoon strong for Appalachian both defeating their opponents in decisive straight sets.
The Mountaineers continue with their 2009 season, as they have a quick turnaround, facing Kennesaw State and Bethune Cookman at Noon and 4 p.m., Tuesday March 10.
