BOONE, N.C.- Appalachian State University women's tennis notched a solid win over Cal State Bakersfield Thursday afternoon at the Grandfather Mountain Tennis Courts as the Apps defeated the Roadrunners 4-3. With the win, ASU improves to 4-10 on the season while CSUB drops to 3-10.
ASU posted a valiant effort but came up just short in doubles play, winning one out of three matches.
The duo of Heather Prior and Blakeley Bean handily defeated their competition at the number two spot, winning 8-4 over Ashley Thorneycroft and Sara Mijwel. The team of Olivia Stannard and Gisela Fernandez lost a tough decision at the number three spot, losing 9-8 at the number three spot, while Amanda Cash and Caroline Mauch also faced the same fate at the number three spot, dropping 9-8 as well to give the Roadrunners the early 1-0 advantage.
In singles play, Cash got the Black and Gold off to a strong start, as the junior easily defeated her opponent in two sets, winning 6-2, 6-4 to tie the match at one apiece. Mauch kept with Appalachian's impressive play as she cruised past Veronica Dimas at the number two position, also winning in two straight sets, 6-1, 6-2.
At the number three spot, Prior was unable to keep pace with Kirstie Jenkins, as she was defeated 6-2, 7-5 to make the match tied once more at two all.
Bean picked up a victory at the number five spot, notching a win over Sara Mijwel, easily winning 6-0, 6-1 to put the Apps back on top 3-2 with two singles matches left.
Fernandez's win at the number six spot clinched the match for the Mountaineers, as the freshman downed her competition in two sets to push Appalachian to the victory.
Stannard capped off the action by dropping a tough match at the number six spot, losing 6-2, 6-4.
Appalachian returns to action Monday March 30, as they take on Gardner-Webb at 3 p.m . at the ASU Tennis Courts.
