Men's Tennis Runs Past Samford, Wins 5-2

BIRMINGHAM, ALA.- Snapping a two match losing streak, Appalachian State University men's tennis picked up an impressive win Saturday morning over SoCon newcomer Samford, as the Apps defeated the Bulldogs 5-2. With the win ASU improves to 10-5 overall and 2-3 in league play, while Samford drops to 5-11 and 2-3 in SoCon action.

The Mountaineers started the match off strong as they were able to capture the crucial doubles point to give the Apps the early 1-0 advantage.

The duo of Trent Constance and Peter Jacobs downed Oliver Reynolds and Carl Abalos 8-1 at the number two spot to help propel ASU to the doubles win. At the number two spot Philip Kloc and Britton Webb came up just short, falling 8-6 at the number three spot, but the team of Bobby Lake and Lee Floyd were able to clinch the win for the Mountaineers, defeating Brian DeShock and Kelwin Dewet 8-6.

Lake continued his impressive play at the number one spot winning in two sets 6-2, 6-2 while Jacobs also remained undefeated on the day, earning a victory at the number three spot, winning in two sets as well.

Constance dropped a tough decision at the number three spot, but Alain Humblet was victorious at the number six position to help ASU earn the win. 

Kloc was defeated at the number five position and to close out the afternoon Floyd beat Abalos 6-3, 6-3.

Appalachian returns to action Sunday March 22 as they take on Tennesse Tech in Cookeville, Tenn. at 1 p.m.
