ASHEVILLE, N.C.- Appalachian State University men's tennis began its 2008-09 campaign on a strong note as the Mountaineers easily defeated UNC Asheville Sunday afternoon 7-0. With the win the Apps improve to 1-0 on the young season, while the Bulldogs drop to 0-3.
The Black and Gold were able to win the doubles point, which helped to propel them to the win, as Bobby Lake and Alain Humblet were victorious over Jonas Brobeck and Morecio Correa, convincingly wining 8-4. At the number two double spot, the duo of Trent Constance and Peter Jacobs handily defeated their opponents 8-1, while freshman Phillip Kloc made his debut with partner Lee Floyd at the number three spot, keeping ASU perfect in doubles action, winning 8-5.
Lake continued with his strong play at the number one singles position, defeating Correa in two sets, 6-2, 6-2.
Constance and Jacobs held down the number two and three positions, winning both their matches in two sets over their competition.
At the number four spot, Floyd beat Nathan White, 6-0, 7-5, while Kloc won his singles match as well playing at number 5, winning 6-3 and 6-2.
Humblet capped off the afternoon, by helping Appalachian stay spotless in singles play , defeating his opponent Alexander Greer 6-1. 6-2.
ASU looks to carry its momentum as the Apps return to action Sunday February 8, playing their first home match of the season against Lees McRae. The match is set to begin at 3 p.m.
