ASU-Montana Postgame Quotes

Appalachian State Head Coach Jerry Moore

Opening statement:
"I congratulate the University of Montana for a great effort. We played well and they played well when they had to play well. They are to be congratulated. We've got a very somber locker room right now as you might expect. We had numerous opportunities to score and didn't.''

"It was every bit the kind of ball game we expected it to be. I don't think the crowd or weather had any effect at all. We're from pretty much the same environment ourselves. We made some really costly mistakes, and like Armanti said earlier they happened in the red zone. A real critical stat was the penalties. The ones in the red zone were catastrophic for us. They took us out of scoring opportunities.

"I thought we played well. We didn't go out and lay down by any meas. It was a great college football game. I'll probably get chastised for saying this, but the FCS probably needed a game like that on national TV. It had to be a plus for the FCS. I'm glad to be a part of it. We played as hard as we could, but we came up a big short.''

On the last play:
"Quick was open. He just didn't handle the ball. He didn't grab on to it and lock on to it. We dropped a lot of balls. It's one thing when you are contacted and drop it, but we catch balls in cold weather all the time. We dropped some key balls and that made a difference.''

On Chase Reynolds:
"He's a guy who sees daylight and creases well. I don't know if we were missing tackles or out of position, but he did a great job of finding creases. He's not exceptionally big. He keeps his pads down and sees things. That's the mark of a good back.''

QB Armanti Edwards

On the final drive:
"We've been in these situations before, plenty of times. WE had plenty of timeouts. We moved the ball all game. We got down there and couldn't punch it in. Obviously Montana is a great team. They haven't lost. You can't take anything away from them. We you get to the red zone, you have to close it out, you have to come out with points.

On Montana's pressure:
"We beat the blitz. Like I said earlier, we got in the red zone and couldn't get points out of it.''

On his career:
"You can't ask for much more than what we have. Appalachian State has three national championships. I personally have two. We won the (Southern) Conference every year. Of course you want to try and win the national championship every year, but when you look back you can't ask for too much more.''

On the last play, and any thought of running it?:
"We didn't have any timeouts. We had to take a shot at the end zone. With no timeouts, running was definitely out of the question..

Linebacker Jacque Roman

On his interception:
"I was basically dropping back to the spot and I saw the receiver coming inside. It was either me or him that was going to get the ball. I went for it and got it.

Wide receiver Brian Quick

On the last play:
"I didn't catch it.''

"Like Armanti said, we've been in these situations before. I just didn't end up catching it.

Running Back Devin Moore

"The crowd wasn't really a factor. We practiced all week with loud noise and a silent count. A lot of people talked about the weather. You just have to deal with it. It was pretty cold, but still at the same time, you have to go play the game and not think about it.

On playing with Armanti Edwards:
"I came in the same year as Armanti and have been playing in the backfield with him all these years. He's something amazing. It's something a lot of people would love to get the chance to do. These past four years, I'll take a lot of memories on and off the field. I'm glad I got the opportunity to play beside him.''

Montana Head Coach Bobby Hauck

"I'm excited to win the game, and obviously it was a great night in the stadium. It was a special effort by our team to get a win against a good football team. They are well-coached. Jerry does a great job with that program. This is a victory to be very proud of.''

"I'm excited, can't you tell? I'm excited. Watching that scene after the game, that's as good as it gets. I've coached for a long time now - not compared to Jerry - and that's as good as it gets in college football. It was national television in a whiteout blizzard and the place is going crazy. It was an insane celebration after the game. It's exciting and fun, but the nature of the playoffs is we have to play on Friday and get back to work in the morning."

On the touchdown drive late in the game:
"We had three minutes and 40 seconds to go down and get some points. We were trying to bleed the clock and leave nothing left. We got down to the 15 and got the holding call. That was a difficult situation. With the wind so strong, we might've been out of field-goal range. We decided to take a shot on first down. Jabin made a nice double move. He got a great release and it was the right call where we needed a play."

How did you win?:
"The reasons we won the game were our ability to run the ball. Armanti was a special player tonight, but our running backs and offensive line were special tonight. Our lack of penalties tonight was huge. That's how we won it. We didn't go a great job of slowing (Armanti) down much. The conditions were awful and he played great.''

On the last 91 seconds:
"Well, it wasn't that much time. They got down the field pretty good. There were two key plays early in the drive. There was a scramble play where we couldn't get Armanti down. We had him tackled and sack and that might've ended the game. The next one was a 20-yard gain in a Cover 2 where he threw in (a very small) area. That was a great throw."

"We won. I wasn't really looking forward to overtime. I hate overtime, I detest it. We challenged on the fourth down call, hoping they'd move it back ½ yard and it would end the game there. They made it by and inch. We're going to the national championship by winning on the last play. Tell me, does it get any better than that? It doesn't and it's awesome."

On going back to the national championship:
"I know that we never go back there not trying to win the damn thing. We'll go play hard and hopefully play our best game of the season."

What did you communicate to your defense on the last play?:
"We thought it might be a roll out with a run-pass option for him. He's just scary. I don't know if we give him the ball on the 2 how many times out of 10 we get him stopped. We chose not to pressure and played our base defense. It ended up being a good call."

S Shann Schillinger

"It was something else. The coaches talked all week about having the chance to win the game. We had an opportunity. Give them credit, they are a good offense. They were able to move the ball and put themselves in a great situation. It was a great job by the defense to make a stand and get a stop when we absolutely needed to.

On the spot challenge:
"I thought it was a good challenge. Regardless of if we got it or not, we were worn down and a little tired. It was a great challenge. The last drive seemed like 20 minutes, but every second was worth it."

On the emotions:
"It was something I've never experienced here. It's great to celebrate with the guys and coaches. The emotions were high. It was two great teams playing. I'm so proud of everybody. I'm honored to be on the team. What a win. We've got to forget about it pretty soon.''

DT Austin Mullins

"Armanti is a special player. He's going to be fun to watch on Sundays. I look at the stat sheet and they had 497 yards and I bet he was responsible for 400."

"It was a special team. You had the two best teams in FCS the last decade, and one of the best offensive players in FCS. That's why you play and what you hope for. It was a special night."

"As soon as we came out for warm-ups I've never heard a crowd in a stadium half full that loud when we were going out to do jumping jacks. It was that exciting."

QB Andrew Selle

On the final touchdown throw:
"After the penalty we knew we had to make up some ground. Jabin made a great play. He put a great fade round on the defender. I tried to put it where I could and he made a great play

RB Chase Reynolds

On his day:
"I played on dirt in high school. I felt like I got great blocks and made some moves.

On going back to Chattanooga:
"It's a blessing. We went last year and as soon as the game was over, everyone knew we had to get back. We put in a lot of hard work. We got a second chance. A lot of people don't get a second chance.

WR Jabin Sambrano

On his touchdown catch:
"I saw the safety fly over to the side. We have a release drill we do in practice every day and coach (Robin) Pflugrad had us ready for that moment. It was a big down and distance. I have him and inside move and ran and prayed to come down with it. Selle threw an excellent ball and it came in perfectly. I was happy and full of joy. Thank you God."

On the review:
"When it was going under review, I was trying to stay calm and I was looking at the refs. They came back out and I saw a lady going like this (touchdown). OK, something must be good. It was really nice.

On going back to Chattanooga:
"I don't think I can grasp it right now. I'm still a young player. I was just doing my job, doing what Coach Hauck prepares me to do. It hasn't hit me yet. It was just another catch. I'm going to Chattanooga. I'm happy.
