BOONE, N.C. - Appalachian State University wrestling held its final tuneup before its 2009-10 opener, holding the annual Black and Gold match Tuesday night that was won 19-16 by the Gold squad.
Freshman Tony Gravely got things started off on a good note for the Black squad, pinning Austin Annas in the second period. Frank Celorrio got the Gold on the board with a hard-fought 2-0 victory over Jacob Earp.
At 141 pounds, Mike Kessler defeated Chris Collura 5-2 to give the Black another six-point cushion but Savva Kostis brought the lead back to three with a 10-3 win over Zack Mastro.
Cip Powell earned an 11-0 major decision, just one of two major decision on the night, over Travis Puckett to give the Black a seven-point lead but a decision by Kyle Blevins and a major decision by Austin Trotman knotted the score at 13 with just three matches remaining.
Dylan Temple gave the Gold its first lead of the night by defeating John Weber 9-2. Paul Glover dropped Brandon Brothers 8-2 at 197 pounds to give the Gold a 19-13 lead heading into the final match.
Ken Altarac defeated Brock Durfee 3-1 at heavyweight, but the Black came up just short, falling 19-16.
The Mountaineers open their season at the Michigan State Open on Nov. 15 and open their home slate on Dec. 19 against Virginia.
