BOONE, N.C. - Frank Celorrio won both his matches as Appalachian State lost to Virginia Tech 36-4 and beat Campbell 34-12 in a non-conference match Friday night in Varsity Gym.
Campbell got on the board against the Mountaineers first with a C.J. Gittens win at 125, but Celorrio gave momentum right back to ASU as he pinned Ritchie Apolinar with 13 seconds to go in the first period.
Appalachian won the won the next four matches as well, starting with Mike Kessler's 11-1 major decision over Ethan Carmody. Kessler took down Carmody four times and added a three-point near fall for the win.
Savva Kostis earned his first career dual match win and his first ever pin by dropping Joel Caudill at the 3:58 mark. Kostis already had a 4-0 lead when he rolled over Caudill for the win. Chip Powell and Kyle Blevins each were victorious at 157 and 165, respectively. Powell, wrestling at 157, a class up from his normal 149, did not let that effect him as he pinned Jake Fose at the 2:48 mark of the first period. Blevins won for the fifth time in his last seven matches by a 10-1 major decision, his third of the season.
Campbell got back on the board when Ryan Ham defeated Antionne Jones in a close 9-5 decision. Ham built a 6-1 lea, but Jones battled back with two takedowns, but couldn't get any closer.
Dylan Temple and David Pritz won the final two matches of the night for ASU. Temple earned a Tech. Fall by beating Kyle Higgins 17-2. Temple earned the final points just as the buzzer sounded. Pritz earned his fifth win of the season with a 4-3 decision over Parker Burns. Pritz got two early takedowns and hung on for the tight win.
In the first match of the day, Virginia Tech proved to be to much for the Mountaineers, winning nine of 10 matches. Celorrio started out strong against the Hokies Jared Jones and led 4-0 after the first period. He increased the lead to 6-0 and gave Appalachian four points with the major decision.
The Black and Gold could not get any closer, but it was not by lack of effort. Blevins, Temple and Pritz all lost their match by three points. Blevins took down Matt Epperly with 17 seconds to go to make it a two point match, but Blevins couldn't get any closer and Epperly earned a riding time point for the final score.
In the second match of the day, Virginia Tech shutout Campbell 47-0 for their 11th win of the season.
