Arie Muniz scored two goals as Appalachian State University beat Lenoir-Rhyne 2-0 in an exhibition match Wednesday evening at the ASU Soccer Stadium.
Muniz scored his first goal of the game off a long pass from Paul Pessina and lofted the ball over the goalkeepers head to give the Mountaineers the 1-0 lead in the 26th minute. Muniz's second goal of the game came in the 88th minute when Chris Treible's shot was saved by Lenoir-Rhyne goalkeeper Matthew DiCerbo and deflected to Muniz and the junior forward put the ball in the back of the net.
The game was Appalachian head coach Shaun Pendleton's first game action as coach of the Mountaineers. "I'm pleased with the result, it was nice to see the new players in game action," Pendleton said. "Overall it was a positive experience, now we have to build on the foundation that we got from today and move forward to Sunday."
Both teams had several scoring opportunities throughout the match. In the 52nd minute, Appalachian's Antonio Harley took a pass from Muniz and took a shot from the left side 15 yards away but Lenoir-Rhyne's Luke Gibson made the save. Later in the half Martin Thomasson broke in alone from the left side but freshman goalkeeper Collin Taylor made the save for the Mountaineers.
Appalachian State will host Emory & Henry on Sunday at 6 p.m. at the ASU Soccer Stadium in another exhibition match while Lenoir-Rhyne will play Pfeiffer on Aug. 28 in their regular season opener.
