SAPPHIRE, N.C. - At the halfway point of Western Carolina's Hummingbird Intercollegiate, Appalachian State University men's golf stands in a tie for 12th place at 306 (+22).
Casey Johnson shot one-over par on Monday to tie for 11th place. Johnson's 32-stroke back nine was the lowest in the 83-golfer field.
Taylor Hines was just one stroke back in 16th place with a 73 (+2).
Dustin Hudson and freshman Daniel Clampett each shot 79 (+8) to tie for 69th on Monday, while
Lance Wheeler was three strokes back at 82 (+11) for 81st place.
Jacob Eggers shot 86 (+15) on Monday to stand in 82nd place after 18 holes.
As a team, the Mountaineers rank sixth out of 14 team with 11 birdies on the day. Hines tied for first in the round with 14 pars while Johnson is fourth in Par-4 scoring with an average of 3.91 (-1).
UCF is the leader on the 6,767-yard course after one day with a team score of 281 (-3). UCF's David Johnson holds the individual lead with a 67 (-4).
Host WCU is in fourth place at 294 (+10) while SoCon rival Elon is sixth at 298 (+14) and Wofford is in seventh place, one stroke back. Samford is 11th after one day at 302 (+18) and Furman is tied for 12th with ASU.
The second and final round from the par-71 Country Club of Sapphire Valley will begin Tuesday morning.
