BOONE, N.C. ? In recognition of their performances in Friday's 70-24 dismantling of No. 3 Wofford, Appalachian State University football players collected a plethora of Southern Conference and national awards on Monday. Appalachian quarterback
Armanti Edwards and safety
Mark LeGree earned National Player of the Week recognition from The Sports Network while Edwards, LeGree and wide receiver
Brian Quick swpet the SoCon's Offensive Player, Defensive Player and Freshman of the Week honors, respectively.
Edwards became the Southern Conference's all-time leader in total offense with 440 total yards and six total touchdowns in Friday's win. His 440 yards of total offense (career-high 367 passing and 73 rushing) tied for the fourth-most in Appalachian single-game history and catapulted him past his predecessor as ASU's signal-caller, Richie Williams, as the SoCon's career leader in the category with 9,397 total yards. Only a junior, Edwards needed just 33 starts to become the conference's all-time total offense leader.
The Greenwood, S.C. native accounted for six of ASU's 10 touchdowns, including a school-record-tying five touchdown passes. In all, he completed 17-of-19 passes without an interceptions, stretching his streak of consecutive passes without an INT to 140.
The SoCon recognition is Edwards' fourth in the past five weeks and 11th of his illustrious career (six offensive, five freshman). The national honor is his third.
LeGree led the Mountaineers' defensive effort versus Wofford with a school-record-tying three interceptions. The sophomore joined Larry McKenzie (1973 vs. Davidson) as the only players in ASU history to pick off three passes in a game. LeGree's three INTs give him seven for the season, which leads the nation and is just one shy of the single-season school record.
In addition to the three interceptions ? two of which accounted for Wofford QB Ben Widmyer's first INTs of the season ? LeGree forced a fumble and tallied eight tackles, including one behind the line of scrimmage. The SoCon and national honors are the first of his career.
Finally, Quick set an ASU freshman record with 172 receiving yards and hauled in three touchdowns in Friday's rout over the Terriers. His 172 yards came on just four catches (good for a whopping 43 yards per reception), including touchdowns of 58, 50 and 31 yards. He shattered the 35-year-old school record for receiving yards by a freshman of 127, set by Devon Ford versus The Citadel in 1973. Prior to Friday, Quick had totaled just 95 yards and one touchdown in his career. The SoCon recognition is his first.
APPS REMAIN NO. 2: Appalachian remained No. 2 in both of the major NCAA Division I FCS polls this week behind top-ranked James Madison. ASU picked up 17-of-109 No. 1 votes in The Sports Network's media poll and fell just three points shy of being a unanimous No. 2 selection in the AFCA coaches' poll, where JMU received all 28 first-place nods.
