No. 2 ASU Welcomes 12th-Ranked The Citadel to The Rock

It's homecoming in the High Country on Saturday, as No. 2 Appalachian hosts No. 12 The Citadel in the weekend's most anticipated Southern Conference matchup. Kickoff is set for 3 p.m. at sold-out Kidd Brewer Stadium. For those without tickets, the contest will be televised live across the Southeast on SportSouth (Check local listings for channel on cable systems.  On satellite systems, SportSouth is channel 649 on DirecTV and channel 437 on Dish Network).

NOTING SATURDAY'S MATCHUP:

? Appalachian and The Citadel have met every season since ASU joined the SoCon in 1972. The Mountaineers hold a 25-11 advantage in the all-time series, including a 15-3 edge in Boone.

? The Mountaineers have won 13 of their last 14 overall versus the Bulldogs, including seven-straight at Kidd Brewer Stadium.

? ASU is 33-11-2 (.739) all-time in homecoming contests. The Apps been victorious in 10 of the last 11 homecoming games at Kidd Brewer Stadium and are 16-3 on homecoming under head coach Jerry Moore.

? The Citadel has been ASU's homecoming opponent twice before. The Bulldogs ruined homecoming at The Rock in 1992 with a 25-0 victory over the Mountaineers, but the Apps topped the ?Dogs, 31-13, in the 1976 homecoming affair.

? Appalachian is 28-8 all-time in SoCon openers, including a 15-4 record under Moore and a 12-3 mark versus The Citadel, its most common conference-opening foe.

? Saturday's showdown marks the first time in series history that ASU and The Citadel will square off while both teams are nationally ranked. Appalachian is 15-1 versus The Citadel when its nationally ranked and won, 27-9, in 1990, the only time in series history that the Bulldogs have been a part of the national rankings.

? Saturday's SportSouth broadcast marks the first time 1983 that the ASU-Citadel duel has been on TV.

? The matchup pits the Southern Conference's top scoring offenses with Appalachian averaging 37.2 points per game and The Citadel averaging 35.5. Both prolific offenses are paced by Walter Payton Awards candidates in Mountaineer quarterback Armanti Edwards (201.8 yards of total offense per game) and Bulldog wideout Andre Roberts (440 receiving yards, six touchdowns).

? Defensively, both squads are led by standout linebacking corps. Middle linebacker Jacque Roman leads the Mountaineers with 33 tackles and two interceptions while the Bulldogs' ?backers are also led by its man in the middle, Reggie Rice (27 tackles, sack, four quarterback hurries).
