Boone, N.C.- Georgia Southern scored two goals in the second half to give them a 2-1 win over Appalachian State Sunday afternoon at the Appalachian Soccer Stadium.
Daniel Smith scored in the 77th minute off a pass from Stephen George for what turned out to be the game-winning goal. George passed a ball from the right side to Smith who put the ball in the lower left corner of the goal.
Appalachian started the scoring in the sixth minute when Steven Sassano lofted a ball over a defender to Arie Muniz who beat the keeper to the left side of the goal, just inside the post. The goal was Muniz's third of the season and the second assist of the season for Sassano.
The Eagles tied the game in the 68th minute when Fredrik Langseth lofted a ball from the left side from 20 yards out over the keepers head.
The Mountaineers missed two golden opportunities on shots that hit the cross bar. In the 22nd minute a header by Paul Pessina hit the cross bar and in the 87th minute a shot from Chris Treible hit the cross bar.
Georgia Southern held an 11-9 advantage in shots while both teams committed 19 fouls
Collin Taylor made three saves in goal for Appalachian while Mike Gubosh also made three saves for Georgia Southern.
With the loss Appalachian drops to 7-5 overall and 2-2 in the SoCon. Georgia Southern moves to 3-6 overall and 1-2 in the SoCon
The Mountaineers travel to Furman on Wednesday, Oct. 15 for a 7 p.m. start.
