BOONE, N.C.- Transfers
Phil Mitchell (Glastonbury, Conn.) and
Jenna Wrieden (Glendale, Ariz.) led Appalachian State University's men's and women's cross country teams to second-place finishes at the Covered Bridge Open on Friday, September 1, at the State Farm Fields in Boone.
The ASU men's team finished in second place, behind Coastal Carolina. All five scorers for the Mountaineers placed in the top 20 out of a field of 82 competitors. Mitchell led the team with a third-place finish (26:14.34), followed by
Ryan O'Keefe (Prospect Harbor, Maine) in 15th (26:45.83), newcomer
Josh Houser (Alpharetta Ga.) placing 16th (26:51.94),
Brendon Helms (Matthews, N.C.) coming in 17th (26:52.98), and
Nathan Hernandez-Adams (Fayetteville, N.C.) rounding out the top five scorers for Appalachian with a 19th place finish (27:01.98).
Coastal Carolina captured the team title by over 30 points, placing four runners in the top 10. John Heron led the team in fourth (26:17.88), followed closely by teammates Jamie McCarthy in sixth (26:21.58), Max Hacker placing seventh (26:28.28), and in ninth place, Doug Currie (26:33.21).
In the women's competition, Appalachian State finished three athletes in the top 15. Arizona State transfer Wrieden crossed the line first for the Mountaineers with a sixth-place finish (18:34.56).
Meghan Gaffney (Pompton Lakes, N.J.) finished thirteenth (18:54.26), followed by
Hannah Parks (Kernersville, N.C.) in 14th (19:16.79).
The ASU women's second-place performance put them ahead of conference-rival Davidson, who finished fourth.
Florida State University finished as meet champions, with four runners in the top10. Amy Huss placed fourth (18:16.54), followed by Barbara Parker in fifth (18:32.95), Jessica Crate in ninth (18:40.11), and Kirsten Hager rounding out the top 10 (18:41.15).
Appalachian's men's and women's teams will return to competition on Friday, September 15, when they travel to Cullowhee, N.C. to take on Western Carolina at 4 p.m.
