NEW YORK ?€“ Six Appalachian State University players, highlighted by first-team selections Kerry Brown, Matt Isenhour, Marques Murrell and Jeremy Wiggins, have been named to the 2006 Associated Press All-America teams, the A.P. announced on Thursday. Brown, an offensive guard from Marietta, Ga., Isenhour, an offensive tackle from Maiden, N.C., Murrell, a defensive end from Fayetteville, N.C. and Wiggins, a defensive back from Macon, Ga., are joined as A.P. All-Americans by third-team running back Kevin Richardson (Elizabethtown, N.C.) and tight end Daniel Bettis (Roswell, Ga.). Top-ranked Appalachian's six representatives on the A.P. All-America squads are the most from any team in the nation. Brown, Isenhour and Bettis anchor a veteran offensive front that has helped lead the Mountaineers to one of the most prolific offensive seasons in school history, ranking among the top five in the nation in scoring (35.7 ppg), rushing (238.1 ypg) and total offense (416.7 ypg). Richardson has also been a big part of putting up those huge offensive numbers, as he leads the nation with 27 total touchdowns and is on the verge of becoming just the second player in ASU history with 1,500 rushing yards in a season. The junior comes into Friday's national championship game versus No. 3 Massachusetts with 162 points and 1,497 rushing yards on the campaign. Defensively, Murrell leads the nation with 12.5 total sacks and is tied for second with six forced fumbles. He has saved his best performances for when it matters most with 6.5 sacks and a pair of caused fumbles in three postseason games, helping lead Appalachian to its second-straight appearance in the national title game. Wiggins leads the Southern Conference with eight takeaways (five interceptions and three fumble recoveries). Three times this season, he has swiped the ball from an opponent twice in a game. Together, he and Murrell lead a unit that ranks among the top 20 nationally in 10 defensive categories, including scoring (14.7 ppg), takeaways (27), rushing (105.3 ypg), total defense (270.1 ypg), sacks (2.6 pg) and interceptions (14). The six A.P. All-Americans are the most ever in a single-season for the Mountaineers. Last year, three Apps ?€“ Murrell (first team), Lynch and former ASU defensive end Jason Hunter (second team) ?€“ received the recognition from the A.P.
