BLACKSBURG, Va. - Virginia Tech's women's tennis team shutout
Appalachian State University, 7-0, in non-conference action today at the
Burrows-Burleson Tennis Center. The Hokie women move to 3-2 on the
year while the Mountaineers open the season with a 1-1 record.
Tech won the No. 2 and No. 3 doubles matches to take the lead, 1-0,
going into the singles action. The Hokies tandem of Larson/Long
earned their first win of the season as they shutout Grate/Moody,
8-0. Harrington/B. James of Tech also blanked their opponent
Parsons/Pierce, 8-0, and picked up their third win of the season. At
No. 1, Elazari/A.James dropped a close 8-6 match to Free/Kirven.
Bethan James (Fr., Flintshire, UK) was the first Hokie to win her
singles match at the No. 3 spot. James downed her opponent Victoria
Moody, 6-1, 6-0. Julia Facchina (Fr., Glenwood, Md.) picked up her
first dual victory of the season with a, 6-1, 6-2, win over Jill
Parsons in the No. 6 match.
At No. 4, Kate Harrington (Fr., Richmond, Va.) had the clinching
point of the match (4-0) when she defeated Alexandra Grate, 6-1, 6-4.
JJ Larson (Fr., Orchard Park, N.Y.) rolled over Lindsey Free, 6-1,
6-1, in the No. 1 match for her 16th career-win.
Jessica Long (Fr., Elizabethtown, Pa.) beat Salem Kirven in straight
sets, 6-3, 6-2, at the No. 2 spot while Meredith Holmes (Jr.,
Bloomington, Ind.) won 6-4, 6-2 over Ann Pierce at No. 5.
Appalachian State takes an extended break before traveling to Georgia State March 5 for an 11 a.m. match.
