BOONE, N.C. ?€“ Richie Williams racked up 409 yards of total offense to lead No. 24 Appalachian State University to 35 second-half points in a 49-21 triumph over No. 20 Eastern Kentucky Saturday afternoon at Kidd Brewer Stadium. The victory was the 150th of Appalachian head coach Jerry Moore's career. Williams, a junior quarterback from Camden, S.C., ravaged the Colonels both with his arm and his feet, totaling a career-high 313 yards on 23-of-29 passing and rushing for 90 yards on 13 attempts. His 409 yards of total offense ranks third all-time at Appalachian, just six yards short of the school-record 415 yards that Steve Brown compiled on Sept. 27, 1980 versus East Tennessee State. Williams also tossed four touchdown passes, tying a career-high set on Nov. 8, 2003 versus Elon and falling just one short of the ASU record for TD passes in a game. Wide receiver DaVon Fowlkes was the main beneficiary of Williams' big day, as the senior from Fort Wayne, Ind. set a career-high for the second-straight week with 11 receptions. His 11 catches, which tied for the fourth-best single-game mark in Appalachian history, went for 171 yards, the sixth-best mark in ASU history. Fowlkes also pulled in one of Williams' four touchdown passes, a 45-yarder in the fourth quarter that stretched the Mountaineers' lead to 42-21. Things did not start well for Appalachian (1-1), however, as a botched snap on a punt gave Eastern Kentucky (0-1) the ball at the ASU three-yard line midway through the second quarter. EKU scored on the very first play following the mishap to take a 7-0 lead. The Mountaineers responded quickly, as their no-huddle offense accounted for a pair of lightning-fast scoring drives to take a 14-7 lead. Following the EKU score, ASU marched 76 yards on eight plays in just 2:37, culminating with a five-yard touchdown reception by tight end Daniel Bettis, to knot the game at 7-7. One possession later, Appalachian capitalized on great field position set up by a 13-yard Fowlkes punt return, as Williams hooked up with Victor Chavis on a 46-yard touchdown pass to give the Apps a seven-point advantage. However, on EKU's last series of the half, the Colonels moved the ball 71 yards on five plays in just 34 seconds and scored on a 24-yard pass from Josh Greco to Patrick Bugg with 10 seconds remaining, sending the squads into the locker room deadlocked at 14-14. After the break, it was all Appalachian, as the Mountaineers scored on their first two possessions of the second half and tallied 21 third-quarter points in all to take a 35-14 lead. Sophomore running back Alan Atwater opened the second-half offensive outburst with a nine-yard touchdown run, followed one series later by true freshman Hans Batichon's six-yard touchdown catch on the first reception of his career. With less than a minute remaining in the third, true freshman Kevin Richardson put the Mountaineers ahead 35-14 with his first career touchdown, a nine-yard run. After Greco scored on a one-yard run to bring the Colonels back within 14 at 35-21 early in the fourth quarter, Fowlkes and Williams put the game away with their 46-yard scoring strike to make it 42-21 with just 5:15 to go. Junior Michael Metcalf became the third Mountaineer running back of the afternoon to put the ball in the end zone, taking it in from one-yard out to close out the scoring with 2:18 remaining. In all, the Mountaineers compiled 492 yards of total offense, their most since tallying 592 versus VMI on Nov. 9, 2002. ASU's 49 points were also its most since the 54-13 demolition of VMI in '02. Closing out Appalachian's record-book achievements was Fowlkes moving into a tie for the school's all-time record with his 105th career punt return. He needs just one more return and seven more return yards to take the school records from Devon Ford, who registered 105 returns and 1,199 punt return yards from 1973-76. Moore's 150th career victory came 23rd year as a head coach, including stints at Appalachian, North Texas and Texas Tech. His overall career record stands at 150-108-2, with a 123-60 mark in 16 seasons at ASU. With the victory, Appalachian also moved to 54-18-2 all-time in home openers. ASU has defeated EKU in four of its last eight home openers. The Mountaineers open their Southern Conference season next Saturday at home versus The Citadel, looking to avenge last year's 24-21 loss to the Bulldogs in Charleston, S.C. Kickoff is slated for 2 p.m. at Kidd Brewer Stadium.
