NOTING SATURDAY'S MATCHUP
• Appalachian (8-0, 6-0 SoCon) is 8-0 for only the second time in the school's 81-season football history. ASU was also 8-0 in 1995, en route to an 11-0 regular season.

• Georgia Southern (4-4, 2-3 SoCon) started at 3-1 under first-year head coach Jeff Monken but has lost three of its last four, including a disheartening 20-13 home loss to Samford last weekend.

• The ASU-GSU series dates all the way back to 1932 but the rivalry began in earnest when the Eagles joined the Southern Conference in 1993.

• Appalachian leads the all-time series, 13-11-1, thanks to wins in four of the last five meetings.

• After three-straight nailbiters from 2006-08, all won by the visiting team, ASU demolished GSU, 52-16, last Oct. 24 in Boone. Prior to last season's blowout, the last three Appalachian-Georgia Southern games had been decided by a total of 11 points.

• The Mountaineers are looking to become become only the second SoCon opponent to ever win three-straight games at Georgia Southern (Wofford became the first to do so earlier this season). The Apps' victories in 2006 and '08 gave them consecutive wins at Paulson Stadium for the first time.

• Saturday's game pits Appalachian's high-powered offense against Georgia Southern's staunch defense. ASU ranks among the nation's top 10 in scoring (39.1 ppg), rushing (238.8 ypg), passing efficiency (157.82) and total offense (464.6 ypg) while GSU ranks among the nation's top 20 in scoring (18.9 ppg), passing (152.5 ypg) and total defense (297.3 ypg).

• However, Saturday's key matchup is Georgia Southern's resurrected triple-option rushing offense (No. 2 in SoCon — 249.8 ypg) against Appalachian's stingy rushing defense (No. 2 in SoCon — 132.1 ypg).

• Saturday marks the second time in five games that the Mountaineers face a triple-option offense. On Oct. 16, ASU limited The Citadel to just 197 yards of total offense and did not allow the Bulldogs to complete a pass in the Apps' 39-10 victory. After Saturday's matchup with Georgia Southern, the Mountaineers face Wofford's vaunted “wingbone” attack in the Nov. 13 SoCon finale.
