Field Hockey Dominates Queens in 6-1 Victory

BOONE, N.C. — Freshman Chloe Hook scored just 44 seconds into her first career start to lift the App State field hockey team to a 6-1 victory over Queens on Wednesday at Dr. Jan C. Watson Field at the Brandon & Erica M. Adcock Field Hockey Complex.

Hook's game-winner set the tone for a game of milestones, as she netted a pair of goals to extend her goal-scoring streak to four consecutive games.

App State (4-1) dominated the attack throughout the contest, outshooting the Royals 22-8 and earning nine penalty corners to Queens' two.

Rylie Novak scored her first collegiate goal in the opening period, tapping in a rebound off a saved penalty corner attempt. Brynn Shaffer added a pair of second-quarter goals to bring her season tally to three, while Sophia Baxter registered her first goal of the season after dribbling into the striking circle and finishing unassisted.

In goal, reigning two-time MAC Goalkeeper of the Week Dakota Anderson made six saves to keep Queens (1-3) quiet most of the evening.

How it Happened
1st: The Mountaineers struck early when Hook found the back of the cage off a feed from Kassie Paul with less than a minute off the clock. Novak extended the lead to 2-0 seven minutes later, capitalizing on a rebound off the Mountaineers' lone penalty corner of the period. App State converted two of its three shots in the opening quarter.

2nd: App State expanded its lead less than five minutes into the period when Shaffer finished a fast break set up by Calista Schwartz. Less than four minutes later, Shaffer dribbled past a pair of Queens defenders to slot home her second goal of the day. Hook tallied her second goal late in the half, deflecting a shot from Baxter off a penalty corner. The Mountaineers put four shots on goal in the frame, converting three into goals while earning three penalty corners.

3rd: The Mountaineers maintained their momentum out of the halftime break. Early in the frame, Baxter dribbled through the defense and scored App State's final goal of the afternoon. App State earned two penalty corners and fired five total shots in the period, forcing a save from the Royals' goalkeeper.

4th: Holding a 6-0 cushion entering the final quarter, App State saw its shutout bid ended when Queens scored with 10 minutes remaining. The Mountaineers kept up the pressure, earning three late penalty corners and forcing six saves from the Royals' substitute goalkeeper to secure the 6-1 win.
