BOONE, N.C. – App State volleyball finished its home tournament 2-1 after winning its final match against Western Carolina. The final match of the Mountaineer Classic between the Mountaineers (5-5, 0-0 SBC) and Catamounts (4-6, 0-0 SoCon) had set scores of 25-18, 25-10, 21-25 and 25-15.
App State led the first set as early as 6-3, and the Catamounts' deficit grew larger with Charlotte Thompson at the net. Thompson made her first start of the season in this match after coming back from injury and made the most of it. During her longest streak, she recorded four straight kills.
The second set saw an 11-point run by the Mountaineers under Iris Williams' serve. The run was aided by three kills from Thompson and two from Lou Johnson, while Raegan Richardson recorded her sixth kill of the match.
Western Carolina went on multiple scoring runs in the third set, and the Mountaineers were not able to catch up.
App State found its way again in the fourth set and closed the match with a 10-point lead.
Leaders from App State included Thompson with 17 kills, a new career high; Delanie Grevengoed with four aces; Johnson with eight total blocks, tying her career high; Richardson with 46 assists; and Davis with 19 digs. For their performances throughout the Mountaineer Classic, Davis and Richardson were named to the All-Tournament Team.
The Mountaineers look forward to a Tuesday road match at NC State and another upcoming tournament weekend at Eastern Kentucky.
