BOONE, N.C. – Despite dominating every statistical category, App State Soccer found itself trailing in the closing minutes of Sunday's match. But on her senior day, Olivia Simon leveled the score with less than six minutes to play, and two minutes later Libby Bermingham put away the game-winning penalty kick to lift App State to a dramatic 2-1 win over William & Mary.
 
The win marked the 100^th career victory for head coach Aimee Haywood, who received an ice bath from the team after the contest.
 
Simon's goal was her second tally in as many games and came off a failed clearance by the Tribe. The senior midfielder pounced on the loose ball just beyond the top of the box and drilled the game-tying goal into the bottom-left corner to knot the score at 1-1. It went as Simon's 11^th career goal in her 60^th career game.
 
Bermingham drew a foul in the box in the 87^th minute when the Tribe (0-3-1) goalkeeper hit her up high after attempting to punch away a cross in the box. Bermingham calmly delivered the go-ahead goal to lift App State (4-1-1) to its third straight win and extend its unbeaten streak to five in a row.
 
The Mountaineers outshot the Tribe 17-8 and outgained William & Mary 13-3 in corner kicks, while holding 64 percent of possession for the match.
 
App State had several high-quality chances to get on the board early in the second half. Ellie Garrison hit the crossbar in the 59^th minute and Simon missed a penalty kick in the 60^th minute of play. Ella Hoover nearly got App State on the board shortly thereafter with a header off an App State corner kick, but a William & Mary defender cleared it off the line.
 
The Tribe seized the lead in the 78^th minute as Mia Abbey found Ellie Leffler on a counterattack.
Eight different Mountaineers registered a shot in the game with Simon and Lucy Harrington each putting two shots on goal. Hanna Skogsfors made four saves, including a sensational diving stop in the 73^rd minute of play.
 
The Mountaineers will travel to Miami on Thursday in a match slated for 7 p.m. App State knocked off the Hurricanes 1-0 in Boone last season for the program's first ACC win. Thursday's match will be broadcast on the ACC Network Extra.
