GREENVILLE, N.C. –
Hayden Petrick connected with
Ellie Garrison for two goals, highlighting a dominant effort for App State Soccer in a 4-0 victory over East Carolina at Bill Clark Homes Field at Johnson Stadium Thursday.
The Mountaineers (3-1-1) are now 3-0 on the road this season and have outscored their opponents 9-1 in those contests. The win marked the third consecutive clean sheet for the App State defense and the most dominant shutout since a 5-0 win over Wofford on Aug. 22, 2024.
App State jumped on the scoreboard in the 28
th minute of play. Petrick dribbled the ball up the right flank and from just beyond midfield delivered a pin-point long ball into the box and Garrison timed her run perfectly, heading the ball into the back of the net in stride.
Leading 1-0 at halftime, App State wasted no time in building on its advantage. Less than a minute into the second stanza,
Sofia Goclowski fed a centering pass to the top of the box for
Olivia Simon who delivered a left-footed strike into the bottom-right corner of the net for her first goal of the season.
On a similar goal to the first tally, Petrick hit Garrison with another long cross in the 58
th minute and the junior forward bodied the ball home to complete her third career brace.
Reigning Sun Belt Defensive Player of the Week
Lucy Harrington capped the scoring in the 77
th minute, heading in a corner kick from
Walker Bristow to push the lead to 4-0. It marked the fourth App State goal this season scored off a corner kick.
App State outgained ECU (0-2-3) 9-2 in corner kicks and outshot the Pirates 18-5 and 11-4 in shots on target. Garrison led the way with six shots (3 on goal) and Simon added four shots (all on target). The victory was the first for the Mountaineers over ECU.
Hanna Skogsfors recorded four saves in the shutout. The three consecutive clean sheets mark the longest streak of shutouts since App State recorded four straight clean sheets Aug. 20- Sept. 3, 2023.
