BOONE N.C. – App State Soccer will play its fifth consecutive in-state opponent to begin the season on Thursday, when the team travels to Greenville, N.C. to face off with East Carolina. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. and the match will be broadcast on ESPN+.
The Mountaineers (2-1-1) are coming off a 2-0 win against Gardner-Webb on Sunday. Sophomore defender
Lucy Harrington posted a career-high three points in the match, including her first career goal, and was subsequently named the Sun Belt Conference Defensive Player of the Week
Lucy Harrington. Harrington led the Mountaineers to a pair of clean sheets on the week. Harrington leads the team in assists (2) and is tied for the team lead in points (4).
Libby Bermingham leads the Mountaineers with two goals. App State finished the match with 28 shots (most since 2016) and 13 corner kicks (most since 2019). App State is 2-0 on the road this season and has outscored its opponents 5-1 in those matches.
East Carolina (0-1-3) is searching for their first win of the season. The Pirates are coming off a 2-2 tie against High Point on Sunday. Despite trailing 2-0 at halftime, the Pirates were able to rally in the second half to draw for the third straight match. Lily Ridge and Lauryn Taylor scored in the contest for ECU. The Pirates were picked to finish 7th in the Americans preseason coaches poll. Midfielder Isabella Gutiérrez, forward Caitlen-Star Dolan Boodram and midfielder AJ Mayock were named to the American Conference preseason watch list.
App State and East Carolina will be meeting for the fourth time in program history. Last year, the Pirates traveled up the mountain to Boone and came away with a 1-0 win. ECU returner Caitlen-Star Dolan Boodram scored in the 7th minute of the game, and an equalizing goal from App State later in the match was waived off for offsides. Thursday's contest marks the Mountaineers' first visit to Greenville since 1997.
