BOONE, N.C. – App State Baseball saw its stretch of five straight Sun Belt series wins come to a close on Sunday, falling 12-3 to Louisiana in the rubber game at Smith Stadium.
Despite five relievers combining to allow just three hits while striking out eight across the final six innings of work, App State (29-20, 16-11) was unable to overcome an early deficit.
Louisiana (32-20, 14-13) grabbed the lead with two runs in the top of the first inning and then belted a pair of home runs in a four-run second to take a 6-0 advantage early. The Ragin' Cajuns pulled away with six runs in the fourth inning, with each of the first eight batters reaching base in the frame. Lee Amedee led the way for the Cajuns, hitting a three-run home run in the second inning and reaching base five times on the afternoon.
App State recorded 12 hits in the ballgame but went just 4-for-24 with runners on base.
Riley Luft provided a lift early with a two-run home run in the third inning on a ball that traveled 440 feet. Luft led the way for the offense, tallying three hits and reaching base four times in the game.
Kameron Miller added a multi-hit game, going 2-for-4 including an RBI single in the seventh.
Ethan Puig also tallied a pair of hits.
Reyn Watson led the charge out of the bullpen, striking out a career-high five batters in two scoreless frames.
The Mountaineers got a pair of impressive plays from the defense in the seventh inning. Luft threw out a runner attempting to go from first to third with a cannon from right field and one batter later
Charlie Evans made a leaping grab in front of the center field fence.
The Mountaineers will close out the regular season at Georgia State Thursday through Saturday, needing a win or a Texas State loss to secure a top six seed in the Sun Belt tournament.
