BOONE, N.C – App State Baseball slugged three home runs and blew the game open with a six-run second inning on its way to a 13-4 victory over Presbyterian to secure a series sweep on Sunday at Smith Stadium.
App State (10-5) notched 14 hits at the plate and tallied 10 strikeouts on the mound, highlighted by a career-high seven strikeouts from
Tanner Nolan to earn his first win of the season.
Leading 3-2 in the second inning, the Mountaineers sent ten men to the plate in the frame.
Joseph Zamora doubled to left-center field and
Nico Soul and
Steven Smith followed with a walk and a hit by pitch respectively to load the bases.
Riley Luft then lined a two-run single to left to push the lead to 5-2. With the bases re-loaded following a walk to
Ethan Puig later in the inning,
Tank Yaghoubi plated a run with a sacrifice fly to left.
Jalen Seward then belted a three-run home run to left field, a 419-foot blast to push App State in front, 9-2. It was Seward's second home run of the week.
The Mountaineers continued their power onslaught in the late innings. Zamora cranked a two-run home run into the visitor's bullpen in the sixth and
Steven Smith crushed a home run to left field in the seventh to bring the lead to 13-4.
Smith finished the day with three hits and four runs scored, while Seward registered two hits and four RBIs.
Everette Harris fired three scoreless innings in relief, allowing just one hit, which was promptly erased on a double play.
Carter Stanford struck out the side in the ninth.
App State will return to action on Tuesday when the team hosts Western Carolina at 6 p.m. The game will be broadcast on ESPN+.
