BOONE, N.C. — The App State tennis team fell to Austin Peay in another 4-3 thriller Saturday at the Deer Valley Athletic Club.
For the second consecutive match, the Mountaineers found themselves tied at three apiece, with the outcome decided by a final set.
How It Happened
The Mountaineers (3-4) opened the day by clinching the doubles point with victories on Courts 1 and 3. The freshman duo of
Allegra Hodson and
Sreenidhi Balaji secured the point on Court 3 with a 6-3 win.
In singles play, No. 9
Savannah Dada-Mascoll delivered a dominant performance on Court 1, winning in straight sets, 6-2, 6-3, to extend the App State lead to 2-0.
Naledi Manyube followed shortly after, and despite trailing 3-0 in the first set, she won six consecutive games to take the set and eventually the match, 6-3, 6-2.
Despite holding a 3-0 lead, the Mountaineers saw the match slip away as Austin Peay (5-2) rallied with wins on Courts 3, 4, and 5 to tie the score. On Court 6,
Alexi Cleveland won her opening set but dropped the second. The decisive third set remained competitive early, but Cleveland fell into a 5-2 deficit after dropping three consecutive games that went to deuce. Although she fought back to 5-4, the Governors eventually secured the final point to clinch the victory.

The Mountaineers travel to Winston-Salem to take on Wake Forest on Sunday. First serve is scheduled for 10 a.m.
