Volleyball Travels to Atlanta to Face Georgia State

ATLANTA — The App State volleyball team looks forward to a pair of matches in Atlanta against Georgia State on Thursday and Friday. Both matches are set for 6 p.m.

LAST TIME OUT
The Mountaineers (15-9, 8-2 Sun Belt) split a pair of matches with Louisiana, dropping a four-set decision Friday before securing a straight-set sweep Saturday.

Delanie Grevengoed recorded a career-high 13 digs Saturday, tying libero MeMe Davis for the match high.

Bella Hutchens and Brooke Doherty led Saturday's victory. Hutchens posted a double-double with 11 kills and 10 digs, while Doherty contributed 10 kills and two blocks.

In Friday's loss to Louisiana, Grevengoed and Hutchens led the offense with 13 kills apiece to build on the Mountaineers' 55 total team kills. However, it wasn't enough to hold off the Ragin' Cajuns, who tallied 57 kills.

MILESTONE CHECK-IN
Chelsea Gilmore leads the squad with 210 career blocks, putting her 40 shy of the 250-block mark.

Lou Johnson follows closely with 207 career blocks, 43 away from 250.

MeMe Davis has recorded 1,534 career digs, 466 away from the 2,000-dig threshold.

Raegan Richardson sits at 2,408 career assists, 592 away from reaching 3,000.

SERIES HISTORY VS. GEORGIA STATE
App State and Georgia State have met 31 times, with the Mountaineers leading the all-time series 18-13.

The teams last met Oct. 31 and Nov. 1, 2025, when Georgia State swept the weekend series. In 2024, however, App State won both matchups.

*Series history prior to 1981 is unavailable.

SCOUTING APP STATE
App State is led by juniors Davis on defense, Richardson at setter, and Hutchens on offense, alongside major contributions from freshmen Nevaeh Hays and Amelia Mancino.

Last season, Davis anchored the back row with a team-high 467 digs, while Hutchens served as a primary threat on the outside with 244 kills.

Richardson, a transfer from South Florida, has seamlessly taken over the starting setter role, leading the team in assists and surpassing 2,000 career assists.

Mancino has provided depth to the Mountaineers' offense and defense in conference play, while Hays has quickly established a presence at the net with consistent scoring (83 kills, .345%) and blocking numbers (60 TB, 3.33 blocks per set).

SCOUTING GEORGIA STATE
The Panthers sit sixth in the Sun Belt East Division with a 9-13 (3-7 Sun Belt) record.

Last season, Georgia State finished 18-10 overall (9-7 Sun Belt) before falling to Southern Miss in the first round of the conference tournament.

Georgia State is led by first-year head coach Jorge Martinez, who previously served as associate head coach and assistant coach at Little Rock.

The Panthers are paced by senior right-side hitter Akira Burt and freshman outside hitter Sophia Johnson, both of whom have earned conference Offensive Player of the Week honors this season.

This is Burt's fourth season with Georgia State. In her first two years, she dominated as a middle blocker, leading the Sun Belt in blocks. Switching to the right side as a junior, she continued to stand out with 259 total points, averaging a career-best 2.85 points per set. She earned Sun Belt Offensive Player of the Week honors on Oct. 13.

In Johnson's first collegiate season, she is averaging 11.05 kills per match with 32 total blocks. She was named Sun Belt Offensive Player of the Week on Sept. 15 and earned a spot on the 2026 Jaguar Classic All-Tournament Team.

ON THE HORIZON
The Mountaineers return home to host Marshall on Nov. 5 and Nov. 6. Nov. 5 will serve as Senior Night, honoring Doherty, Caroline Greene, and Grevengoed. Both matches are scheduled for 6 p.m. and will stream live on ESPN+.
