Mountaineers Face Coastal Carolina in Midweek Matchup

BOONE, N.C. - In the third contest of a four-game homestand, the App State women's basketball team (7-6, 0-3 SBC) will host Coastal Carolina on Wednesday at 6:30 p.m. in the Holmes Center. The game will be available to stream on ESPN+. 
 
Wednesday's game and Saturday's 1 p.m. game against Southern Miss are JMKC Bring A Friend games. JMKC members are invited to bring one friend, age 12 or under, for free. JMKC members can show their JMKC credential at the Southwest entrance, or email proof of membership to the App State ticket office for free admission. 
 
Last Time Out
In its first game of the new year, App State fell short to Marshall, 53-48, in Boone. Freshman Addie Biel netted a team-high 12 points, marking her second consecutive game as App State's top scorer with both performances coming off the bench. The Mountaineers' top rebounder of the night was Emma Smith, who grabbed 11 boards. Senior Emily Hege dished out a team and season-high six assists.
 
Rankings Report
Smith remains the Sun Belt's leader in assist/turnover ratio (2.33) and assists per game (4.3), ranking among the NCAA's top-85 in both categories. She also continues to lead the Mountaineers in rebounds, averaging 6.1 boards per contest. Junior Daisia Mitchell and sophomore Jayden McBride remain App State's top scorers, averaging 11.0 and 10.5 points, respectively. 
 
Entering Wednesday's contest, App State continues to lead the Sun Belt and stands 25th nationally in scoring defense (55.3). The Mountaineers also remain the SBC's leader in field goal percentage (45.2%) and stand second in the league in assists per game (14.6) as well as rebound margin (7.7). 
 
In conference-only action, App State leads the Sun Belt in free throw percentage (76.7%) and ranks second in 3-point percentage (36.2%). Smith ranks third in free throw percentage (88.9%) and minutes played.
 
Series History vs. Coastal Carolina
App State leads its series against Coastal Carolina, 16-8. The Mountaineers split its contests with the Chanticleers during the 2024-25 campaign. On Jan. 11, 2025, the Black and Gold secured a 63-60 victory over the Chants. Rylan Moffitt and Elena Pericic were App State's top scorers, netting 15 points and 12 points, respectively. Pericic also combined with Mara Neira for six of App State's ten 3-pointers, and was the Black and Gold's top rebounder, grabbing seven boards. App State held the Chants to seven second chance points as well as a team 3-point percentage of 28%. 
 
In the 2024-25 regular season finale, the Mountaineers fell short to Coastal Carolina, 88-51, in Conway, S.C. Emily Carver led the charge against the Chants, netting a team-high 11 points. Moffitt and Pericic grabbed a combined 13 rebounds and Zada Porter dished out two assists. 
 
Scouting Coastal Carolina
Coastal Carolina is 7-9 on the season and 0-4 in Sun Belt play. The Chants opened conference action with a pair of losses to James Madison (Dec. 17) and Georgia State (Dec. 20). CCU closed 2025 with a 103-41 victory over Columbia College on Dec. 29 before falling short to Marshall in overtime on New Year's Day and dropping a contest to Georgia Southern on Jan. 3. 
 
Four Chanticleers average double figures, led by graduate student guard Kristin Williams. Williams averages 14.3 points per contest and leads the Sun Belt with 55 3-pointers, a mark that ranks second nationally. She also stands second in the conference and third in the NCAA in 3-pointers per game (3.44). Additionally, Williams leads the Sun Belt and ranks 12th nationally in 3-point percentage (45.5%) and is the Chants' assists leader with 3.1 assists per game. Joining Williams in the nation's top-25 in 3-pointers is junior forward Tessa Grady, who knocked down 42 this season thus far. Junior forward Tateyoina Harris is Coastal Carolina's top rebounder, grabbing an average of 6.6 boards per game. 
 
Coastal Carolina ranks second in the league in 3-pointers per game (9.5), 3-point percentage (35.6%) and 3-point percentage defense (25.8%), ranking among the NCAA's top-45 in all three categories.
 
In Sun Belt-only play, CCU ranks third in 3-point percentage (36.1%) and made 3-pointers (8.8). Williams leads the SBC in 3-point percentage (55.6%), 3-pointers per game (5.0), and minutes for conference play. She also rounds out the league's top-five scorers with 18.5 points per conference clash.
 
On the Horizon 
App State will round out its four-game homestand with a 1 p.m. matinee against Southern Miss on Saturday. Fans will be able to play Basketball Bingo at the game to win one of three prizes. Following the game, fans are encouraged to stick around to meet the team for an autograph session.
