BOONE, N.C. – The App State women's basketball team dominated its home opener on Wednesday, rolling to a 107-43 victory over Montreat College.
The 107-point performance for the Mountaineers (2-0) ties for the sixth-highest single-game scoring total in program history. App State held the Cavaliers (2-3) to just 43 points, the fewest allowed in any of the program's 107-point games.
"Thought we had a pretty good crowd," Head Coach
Alaura Sharp said. "That was exciting, and I thought they would be slow to trickle in with the 5 p.m. start. When I came out of halftime, I was like, man, this looks like goals and things we're trying to do. I told our kids before the game that they've got to try and create some stickiness, we want to try and borrow some men's basketball fans when we play before them on a doubleheader. Our team is fun to watch, with 18 assists and a lot of emotion and passion, and it feels good to be 2-0."
Jadyn Atchison led five Mountaineers in double figures, scoring 16 points on 5-for-6 shooting to go along with five rebounds.
Jayden McBride added 15 points,
Daisia Mitchell scored 14,
Feryal Defne Atli contributed 12 and
Torin Rogers rounded out the double-digit scorers with 10.
For the second consecutive game, the Mountaineers locked down defensively, holding Montreat to 31.6% shooting from the field and 23.8% from 3-point range. App State forced 26 turnovers, converting them into 39 points.
The Mountaineers opened the game on an 18-0 run, keeping the Cavaliers off the board until the 4:22 mark of the first quarter. McBride and Rogers paced App State early, scoring 10 points each in the opening 10 minutes. McBride went a perfect 3-for-3 from the field, while Rogers shot 3-for-4, including two 3-pointers.
App State kept pushing in the second quarter, extending its lead to a half-high 48 points to take a 62-14 advantage into the break. Nine Mountaineers scored in the period, highlighted by Atchison and Mitchell, who combined to shoot a perfect 5-for-5 for six points apiece.
Out of halftime, App State maintained its defensive intensity, forcing seven turnovers and holding Montreat to 5-for-12 shooting in the third frame. Freshmen
Zoe Smith and
Jaida McClure made their collegiate debuts, with McClure posting two points, two rebounds and two assists in five minutes of play.
Holding an 84-25 cushion entering the fourth quarter, the Mountaineers continued their efficient scoring. Atchison scored eight points on 3-for-3 shooting in the final period, Mitchell added six on another 3-for-3 effort and
Addie Biel scored four of her eight total points by going 2-for-2. App State outscored Montreat in the fourth despite the Cavaliers shooting 50% in the frame to seal the 64-point victory.
