MOBILE, Ala. –
Juan Correa belted two home runs, including a grand slam that highlighted a five-run fourth inning, leading App State to a 12-2 victory over South Alabama in the series finale at Stanky Field.
Correa finished the day with eight RBIs, the most for an App State hitter in the Sun Belt era, while notching his fourth multi-homer game of the season. The bullpen tossed 8.2 scoreless innings, headlined by four scoreless frames from
Cal Clark.
Kameron Miller broke a 2-2 tie in the second, lining a two-run single with the bases loaded, and App State (22-28, 12-15) never looked back, scoring the final ten runs of the contest.
Leading 4-2,
Riley Luft led off the fourth inning with a double down the right field line. With two outs,
Joseph Zamora and Miller worked back-to-back walks to load the bases and Correa followed with his grand slam to blow the game open. Later in the frame,
Tyler Figueroa singled home
Braxton Church who reached on a two-out double.
App State recorded three doubles in the contest, eclipsing 100 doubles on the season.
The Mountaineers continued to add on late. In the eighth inning, Zamora singled to center field and two batters later Correa uncorked his second home run of the ballgame over the left-center field fence. The senior first baseman has now hit a team-best 16 home runs on the season which ties him for the fifth-most in a single season in program history. His 58 RBIs this season are also tied for tenth-most all-time.
App State capped the scoring with an RBI groundout from
Tyler Lichtenberger in the ninth.
The Mountaineers opened the scoring in the top of the first inning.
Tanner McCammon doubled to begin the ballgame and Lichtenberger followed with a single. Later in the inning Correa lashed a two-run single into left field to give App State a 2-0 edge.
Luke Oblen started the ballgame but lasted only 0.1 innings as South Alabama (21-27, 10-17) plated two runs to tie the ballgame in the home first.
Jake Beaty came out of the bullpen to minimize damage and went on to work 2.2 scoreless innings to earn the win. After four scoreless innings from Clark,
Everette Harris recorded the final six outs for the Mountaineers.
All nine App State starters recorded a hit (the team finished with 15) and eight players scored at least one run. Zamora, Correa and Luft all finished with three-hit efforts.
The victory marks App State's first win since April 18, ending an 11-game losing skid.
App State concludes regular season play at home this week by hosting Georgia State Thursday through Saturday at Smith Stadium looking to punch their ticket to the Sun Belt Tournament. The 2025 App State baseball season is presented by Chick-fil-A.
