FARMVILLE, Va. — The App State field hockey team took down MAC opponent Longwood 3-1 on Friday.
Sophia Baxter,
Lise Boekaar and
Sarah Perkins scored in the contest, with Perkins finding the back of the cage for her first goal this season.
The Mountaineers (11-3, 5-1 MAC) dominated possession in the Friday matchup, tallying 23 shots on goal and forcing 10 corners on the Lancers (3-10, 1-5 MAC).
How it Happened
1st: The Mountaineers opened the game by putting pressure on the Lancers, earning a penalty corner with three shots on goal. Assisted by Boekaar on a penalty corner, Baxter scored her 11th goal of the season to put the Mountaineers on the board first with less than a minute remaining in the period.
2nd: App State continued to put the pressure on, forcing three penalty corners on the Lancers. Despite seven shots on goal to Longwood's zero, the Mountaineers failed to convert the chances into goals, holding a 1-0 lead heading into the halftime break.
3rd: Coming out of halftime, the Lancers tied the game at one apiece. The Mountaineers generated four penalty corners and outshot Longwood 10-1, leading to Boekaar's 11th goal of the season with less than 10 seconds left in the period.
4th: With a 2-1 lead in the final period, the Mountaineers continued to put the pressure on, outshooting Longwood 11-3, forcing six saves from the Longwood goalkeeper. Coming off a penalty corner, Perkins found the back of the cage to extend the Mountaineer lead to 2, leading to their third consecutive win.
