dDURHAM, N.C. – App State fell behind early and was unable to overcome a big fifth inning, falling to No. 12 Duke 28-2 at Jack Coombs Field, Tuesday.
App State's (9-3) offense came in the top of the fifth inning.
Dillon Moquin and
Graham Smiley worked back-to-back walks to begin the inning, and after a fielder's choice,
Joseph Zamora singled through the right side to plate Smiley. One batter later,
CJ Boyd plated another run with a sacrifice fly, to trim the deficit to 6-2.
Duke answered with a mammoth bottom half of the inning, scoring 16 runs, highlighted by two home runs from Ben Miller, including a grand slam. The Blue Devils also scored six runs in the first inning and five more in the seventh.
App State will continue its road trip in Rock Hill, S.C. as they visit Winthrop for a three-game series. First pitch is set for 3 p.m. on Friday, 2 p.m. on Saturday, and 1 p.m. on Sunday. All three games will be broadcast on ESPN+.
