Mountaineers Defeat Kent State to Stretch Win Streak to Five

KENT, Ohio – The App State field hockey team defeated the Kent State Golden Flashes on Friday to a score of 1-0.
 
The Mountaineers (7-3, 4-0 MAC) never trailed in Friday's matchup, with Frederique Grimbergen finding the back of the cage late in the fourth period.
 
The App State defense was on point today, holding Kent State (2-8, 2-1 MAC) to not a single shot in the last 15 minutes of play. Goalkeeper Claire Grenis earned her fifth shutout on the season, making her first in the MAC in shutouts.  
 
How it Happened
 
1st: The game started off close, with both teams struggling to find attacking chances early in the contest. Each team finished the period with one shot on goal, with the Mountaineers leading the shot count 3-2 heading into the second period.

2nd: The Mountaineers held more possession in the second period, forcing two corners and a shot on goal to Kent State's zero. A Henriette Stegen goal was called back after video review, taking what would have been the first goal off the board. The Mountaineers end the half winning the shot count 6-2, tied at zero apiece.

3rd: App State controlled the pace of the period coming out of the break, forcing two corners to Kent State's zero. The Mountaineers tested the Kent State goalkeeper Lieve Jansen three times in the period, finishing the third with five saves total. Both tallied one shot on goal in the period, giving Claire Grenis three saves going into the final period.
 
4th: The Mountaineers continued the offensive onslaught in the fourth, tallying five shots on goal in the period to Kent State's zero. Frederique Grimbergen scored the first and only goal of the game early in the period, putting the ball in the top left of the cage. The Mountaineers finished the period without allowing a single shot, while defeating the Golden Flashes to a score of 1-0.
