BOONE, N.C. — The App State men's and women's cross country teams will head to Foley, Ala., for the 2024 Sun Belt Championships that are being held Friday morning.
The App State men will look to repeat as champions in the 8K race, which is slated for 9:30 a.m. ET (8:30 a.m. CT). The 5K for the App State women, who are contenders for a strong finish, will follow at 10:15 a.m. ET (9:15 a.m. CT).
The meet will be available to stream on ESPN+.
Last Time Out
The Mountaineers' men's and women's squads split for their final races of the regular season, as the women previewed the NCAA Southeast Regional course at Winthrop in Rock Hill, S.C., and the men traveled to Charlottesville, Va., for a meet hosted by the University of Virginia.
The women's squad took the top eight spots and clinched first in the team standings with 15 points at the Adidas Winthrop Invitational in Rock Hill, S.C. on Oct. 18. Senior
Lauren Johnston led the pack with a 6K time of 21:43.1. Fellow seniors
Emma Russum and
Jasmine Donohue placed second (22:02.9, PR) and third (22:14.8), respectively. Rounding out the top five were seniors
Karsyn Kane (22:16.8, PR) and
Lana Farris (22:19.4). Freshman Bre Budzinski placed sixth (22:33.6), sophomore
Rhys Ammon placed seventh (22:51.7) and senior
Catherine Breault finished eighth (23:20.7).
At Virginia's Panorama Farms Invitational, the men's team placed eighth with 235 points. Junior
Ethan Lipham set the pace for the Mountaineers, clocking an 8K personal best of 23:43.6 to place 15th overall. Graduate student
Ethan Turner placed 28th with a time of 23:59.3. Rounding out the top 75 was redshirt junior
Chase Burrell, who stopped the clock at 24:46.1. Freshman
Thomas Wlazlowski clocked a time of 25:09.7, and fellow freshman
Aaron Kidd stopped the clock at 25:12.1.
Last Time at the SBC Championships
At the 2023 Sun Belt Championships, the men's squad clinched their first team title since 2019. The Mountaineers totaled 28 points, which was the lowest total at the championship meet since 2013. Three-time 2023 Sun Belt Runner of the Week honoree
Oliver Wilson-Cook led the Mountaineers with an 8K time of 24:40.4 to place second.
Calbert Guest and
Dwayne Lillie took third (24:46.3) and fourth (24:53.6), respectively. Wilson-Cook, Guest, and Lillie each earned first-team All-SBC accolades.
Garrett Bivens earned second-team All-SBC honors with a sixth-place finish and time of 25:05.0.
Jonah Bird recorded a time of 25:42.7 to place 13th and earn a third team All-SBC nod.
South Alabama's Teagan Flanagan took the individual men's title with a time of 23:57.2.
Donohue led the Mountaineers in the women's 5K, clocking a time of 17:36.9 to place eighth and earn second-team All-SBC accolades. Kane placed 18th with a time of 18:38.8 while Ammon rounded out the top 25 with a time of 18:38.8.
Linnea Maynard and Farris finished among the top-45, clocking times of 19:03.6 and 19:13.8. The women's squad placed fifth in the team standings with 125 points.
Arkansas State took the women's team title with 48 points and Coastal Carolina's Molly Jones took the individual title with a time of 16:37.9.
