App State Hosts Queens in Final Home Game

The App State field hockey team takes on Queens on Friday. The Mountaineers (9-7, 6-1 MAC) are looking to get back in the win column, previously falling to No.22 Old Dominion last Sunday.  Friday's matchup against the Royals (2-12) is third matchup in three years between the two programs.

Last Time Out
The Mountaineers fell to the No.22 Old Dominion Monarchs last Sunday. Although the Monarchs scored two goals in the first period, Jillian Orcutt found the back of the cage in the period, making the score 2-1 for the rest of the contest. The Mountaineers held firm, and senior Claire Grenis tallied 10 saves on the day.
 
Scouting the Mountaineers  
The Mountaineer offense has been relentless this season, as they are third in the MAC in goals scored with 31. The Mountaineers are second in the MAC in shots and penalty corners, putting pressure on defenses in the attack zone. Charlotte Bosma is third in the MAC with 33 shots on goal and game-winning goals with three on the season.
 
14 different Mountaineers have found the back of the cage this season. Nine Mountaineers have scored two or more goals on the season, led by Charlotte Bosma and Henriette Stegen who have four goals apiece.
 
App State's defense has been stellar as well, not allowing many shots to be attempted. The Mountaineers have allowed 84 shots on goal through 15 games, 66 less than the 150 the Mountaineers have earned. Per game, the Mountaineers only allow 8.6 shots a game, a sharp contrast to the 17.8 for the Mountaineers. Senior goalkeeper Claire Grenis has anchored the Mountaineer defense, keeping opponents to 1.6 goals a game as a result. In their five-game winning streak, Grenis allowed only three goals past her while shutting out three opponents.
 
Mountaineers have taken home MAC Player of the Week honors five times in four weeks of play. Grenis and Bosma have each won the award twice, sweeping both week one and week four, while Florine Koopman received Player of the Week in week three for her two-goal performance against Davidson.
 
Scouting the Royals
Queens enters Friday's matchup coming off a 0-17 season in 2023. The Royals are led by head coach Brandi Kist, who is in her ninth year with the program.
 
Series History
This is the third meeting between the Mountaineers and Royals in program history, with the Mountaineers leading the series 2-0. App State has played Queens the past two seasons, defeating the Royals 10-1 in 2022 and 7-0 in 2023.

The Mountaineers will travel to Harrisonburg, Va. to face off against conference opponent James Madison on Sunday. A win for the Mountaineers gives them the share of the regular season title for the second season in a row. First touch at James Madison is slated for 1 p.m.
