CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- App State men's basketball is set for its third road game of the season against Charlotte on Friday at 7 p.m.
The contest will be broadcast live on ESPN+ with live stats and listening options available to follow along.
THE SERIES
- This will be the 40th meeting between the two schools in a series that the 49ers lead 24-15.
- Charlotte won the most recent matchup last season 67-66 in Boone on Nov. 18, 2021. App State won the year prior, 61-57, which was the last time the squads met in Charlotte on Dec. 11, 2020.
SCOUTING THE MOUNTAINEERS (5-3)
- App State is undefeated on the road so far this season. The Mountaineers defeated Louisville 61-60 on Nov. 15 and defeated ETSU 74-70 on Nov. 23. Donovan Gregory was the leading scorer in both contests.
- The Mountaineers dropped their last matchup against Furman despite a 17-0 run in the second half to erase a 10-point deficit.
- Justin Abson leads the Sun Belt in blocks with 22 through his first eight collegiate games. He ranks eighth in the country and first among freshmen. He has blocked at least one shot in every game of his young career.
- Gregory has stepped into a new leadership role this season, pacing the team in points, assists and steals. The senior from Charlotte, N.C. had a 16-point outing in App State's win over Louisville and a season-high 21 against Campbell. His scoring average of 14.3 is significantly higher than his previous career high of 10.9 that he earned last season.
SCOUTING THE 49ERS (6-2)
- Charlotte has started the season undefeated at home with wins over Coppin State, Maryland Eastern Shore and Presbyterian.
- In their last game, the 49ers won at Davidson in overtime thanks to a buzzer-beating three from Jackson Threadgill, a starting guard who averages 7.8 points.
- C-USA Freshman of the Year Aly Khalifa leads the team in scoring with 10.1 after posting 19 points against Davidson. He has also grabbed a team-high 8.1 rebounds per game and leads the squad in assists with 31. Similarly to CJ Huntley, Khalifa stands 6'11" and has the ability to stretch the floor with his three-point game.
- Brice Williams is Charlotte's other double-digit scorer with 10 points per game. His season-high of 16 came in a 21-point loss to Detroit Mercy last week.
