TOWSON, Md. – App State doubled Georgetown's shot total with a 22-11 advantage, but the Mountaineers fell 3-2 to the Hoyas in Saturday's season opener at the Towson University Field Hockey Complex.
Junior forward
Sarah Farrell scored at the 48:11 mark to pull the Mountaineers within one score at 3-2, but neither team found the back of the net the rest of the way.
Sydney Lee, a senior forward, came off the bench to score App State's first goal of the season when she collected a pass from Farrell off a rebound right before halftime. App State went into the half with a 2-1 deficit.
Freshman attacker
Charlotte Bosma led the way with seven of the team's 22 shots, including five of hers on goal. Farrell and
Anna Smarrelli added five shots apiece.
Georgetown goalkeeper Ciara Weets saved 12 of the Mountaineers' 14 shots on goal. The Hoyas got scores from Abby English, Sydney Stephenson and Emma Street.
App State keeper
Addie Clark had four saves, and the Mountaineer defense limited Georgetown to just seven shots on goal.
The Mountaineers return to action with a 1 p.m. game against tournament host Towson on Sunday.
App State will then visit Wake Forest next Saturday, Sept. 4 at noon. The Mountaineers' first home game will be against James Madison on Friday, Sept. 10 at 6 p.m.
