Baseball Resumes Schedule at NC State

BOONE, N.C. — App State, which last played a week ago in a midweek road game against ACC opponent Wake Forest, returns to action with a midweek road game against ACC opponent NC State.

First pitch Tuesday between the Mountaineers (11-12) and Wolfpack (10-11) on Doak Field at Dail Park is scheduled for 6 p.m. There are no tickets available for purchase by the public, but the game will be available on ACC Network Extra.

App State has taken a "staff day" approach to its first five midweek games, and traditional Saturday starter Quinton Martinez is expected to begin the NC State game on the mound. The Wolfpack's probable starter is left-hander Chris Villaman, a 2020 college freshman who had nine strikeouts in a one-hit shutout of UNCG last Tuesday.

The Mountaineers and Wolfpack last met in 2015, when NC State won 6-4 in Raleigh, and App State's Jaylin Davis hit a three-run homer two years earlier in the first inning of a 6-3 road victory to open the 2013 season. In a matchup of future MLB players, Davis (now with the San Francisco Giants organization) homered in his first college at-bat while facing star Carlos Rodon (a Chicago White Sox pitcher). The Wolfpack is scheduled to play its first-ever game in Boone on Tuesday, April 27.

App State has seven total games scheduled this season against ACC schools (home-home with both Wake Forest and NC State, plus a late-season series at Miami). The Wolfpack is scheduled to play its first-ever game in Boone on Tuesday, April 27.

The Mountaineers will be playing for the first time in a week because a weekend series at Sun Belt Conference opponent Coastal Carolina was postponed Thursday, hours before first pitch of Game 1, with the Chanticleers pausing all baseball activities for seven days, in accordance with the league's COVID-19 guidelines.

NC State started the season 4-9 overall and 1-8 in ACC play before putting together a five-game winning streak that included a series sweep of North Carolina.
