Wake Forest Shuts Out App State

BOONE, N.C. — Wake Forest shut out App State in a midweek game Tuesday on Beaver Field at Jim and Bettie Smith Stadium.

The Mountaineers, who lost 12-0, return to action Friday in Nashville with the start of a three-game, nonconference series at Lipscomb.

App State (13-15) trailed 2-0 in the fifth inning before Wake Forest, which had benefited from solo homers in the second and third innings by Bobby Seymour and Brendan Tinsman, produced seven more runs. Two bases-loaded walks and a hit batter preceded a grand slam from Chris Lanzilli.

Kendall McGowan's two-out double to the wall in center gave App State its best scoring chance in the bottom of the fourth inning. Andrew Terrell added a first-inning single.

On the mound, the Mountaineers' best performances came from starter Trey Tujetsch, Andrew Papp and Ben Peterson.

Tujetsch struck out six batters in 4.1 innings, retiring 11 of the 15 batters he faced through four innings.

Papp pitched two scoreless innings, building off the scoreless inning he threw Sunday, and Peterson followed a 95-mph strike with a 94-mph fastball on the corner for a strikeout during a scoreless ninth.

Austin Primm retired five of the last six batters he faced, beginning that stretch with back-to-back strikeouts.

Reed Mascolo pitched five shutout innings to earn the win for Wake Forest (11-15).
