Box Score WILMINGTON, N.C. — Despite a rough start, App State received an early spark from reliever
Jason Cornatzer, but UNCW continued to apply pressure on the way to a 7-1 victory Sunday at Brooks Field.
The first five UNCW batters reached in the bottom of the first inning, triggering Cornatzer's entrance with a 2-0 deficit and the bases loaded. Cornatzer proceeded to strike out three consecutive batters to keep the Mountaineers in the mixd, and App State loaded the bases with two away in the second inning, but a pop-out to center ended that threat.
UNCW (10-3) responded with two more runs in the second and one in the third to seize control. App State (6-8) pushed across a ninth-inning run thanks to
Robbie Young's leadoff single and an RBI single from
Alex Leshock, who went 2-for-4.
The Mountaineers left 11 runners on base in the loss. They are scheduled to return to action Tuesday with a 5 p.m. home game against North Carolina A&T.
Cornatzer struck out six batters in three innings, as he relieved two-way starter
Andrew Terrell.
Eli Ellington (one run allowed in three innings),
Andrew Papp and
Cy Smith (scoreless eighth inning) also pitched for App State.
At the plate, Terrell drew three walks, and
Andrew Greckel drew two.
Hayden Cross was 1-for-2 with one walk.
