DAVIDSON, N.C. - App
State field hockey dropped the spring season-opener 4-2 on the road at Davidson Saturday.
Today's contest was the Mountaineers' first game in a span of 16 months.
With four minutes to go in the first, App State jumped out to an 1-0 advantage when freshman
Grace Ball redirected a shot attempt toward the back of the net off a corner opportunity. The goal was Ball's first collegiate goal in her first collegiate appearance.
Meghan Smart drew the foul in the circle prompting the corner.
Davidson would then score four unanswered goals, three in the second quarter, and head into the half with a 4-1 lead.
App State came out in the second half with pressure and found the net again. Early in the fourth,
Pauline Mangold connected on a goal, assisted by
Meghan Smart, to pull the Mountaineers with two.
The Mountaineers outshot the Wildcats 7-2 in the second half and drew four corners. However, 4-2 is as close as App State would get. Sarah Ferrell,

App State will be back in action Friday, March 12, and Saturday, March 13, looking for win number one on the season as they host MAC conference foe Ball State for a two-game home series stand. Both Friday and Saturday's matchups are a noon start at Brandon & Erica M. Adcock Field.
