BOONE, N.C. -- App State volleyball dropped a 3-1 (25-22, 25-20, 18-25, 26-24) decision at home to Georgia Southern on Sunday.
McCall Denny paced App State (7-19, 3-11 SBC) with 14 kills and a career-best 16 digs.
Daryn Armstrong finished with a career-high 11 kills on a .280 hitting mark and
Victoria Wilform added 10 kills. Wilform has now reached double figures in kills in her last five contests.
Sam Bickley tallied a double-double with 39 assists and 13 digs.
Emma Reilly had 15 digs and
Alexis Hardison added eight digs.
In the opening set, the Mountaineers opened a 16-11 lead off a kill from
Anna Kincaid. Georgia Southern (15-9, 8-6 SBC) answered with the next three points, but App State came right back with two straight points, capped off by a kill from Wilform, to open an 18-14 edge. The Eagles responded with five straight points to take a 19-18 lead and closed the set with four straight to take the first frame 25-22.
The second set featured 10 ties and three lead changes. App State used a block assist from
Lily Harvey and Bickley to tie the set at 16-16. Georgia Southern broke a 17-17 tie with a 5-1 run to take a 22-18 edge. The Mountaineers scored the next two points, but the Eagles answered with the next three to take the second set 25-20.
The Eagles took an 11-8 lead in the third, but App State battled back to tie the score at 13-13 off a kill from Armstrong. Leading 18-17, the Mountaineers used a 6-0 run, getting a pair of kills from Denny along the way, to open a 24-18 advantage. Following a Georgia Southern point, Armstrong clinched the set for the Black and Gold with a kill.
Georgia Southern jumped out to a 14-5 lead in the fourth set. App State pulled within seven points, but the Eagles pushed their lead back to 10 points at 21-11. From there, the Mountaineers used a furious rally to come all the way back and tie the set at 24-24. App State used a pair of 5-0 runs during the comeback. With the score tied, Georgia Southern scored two consecutive to clinch the set and win.
The Mountaineers finished with a .240 hitting percentage in the contest, tallying 55 kills.
App State will host Coastal Carolina in its home finale on Thursday at 5 p.m. The match will also be streamed on ESPN+.
