MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. - App State field hockey (7-7, 3-4 MAC) won its second road game of the season at Central Michigan (3-13, 1-6 MAC) Friday in a 3-1 victory.
After the win, the Mountaineers will gain a spot in the MAC tournament if Longwood defeats Ohio tomorrow at 1 p.m.
Junior forward Rachel Fleig struck first in the seventh minute of the game off of Sterre Molkenboer's assist on a tip-in from a corner play. This was Fleig's first goal of the season and the sixth of her career.
Two minutes later, Central Michigan's BobbiMarie Parker scored to tie the game at one apiece.Â
In the second period, Molkenboer scored on a breakaway play to give the Mountaineers a lead that they would never lose.
Already up 2-1 in the third, Leah Hurwitz registered the first goal of her career to give App State a comfortable two-goal advantage.
The Mountaineers outshot the Chippewas 10-7 with seven shots on goal to Central Michigan's three. Other shot takers for the Black & Gold were Anna Smarrelli (3, 2) and Friederike Stegen (3, 1).
