Formato, Brito Lead Way at Wolfpack Round Robin Event

RALEIGH, N.C. — Road roommates in Raleigh, Will Formato and Anthony Brito were both locked in at the Wolfpack Round Robin event Saturday.
 
The morning after a Friday night dual between App State and NC State, 20 members of the Mountaineers' wrestling team participated in a combined 46 matches against wrestlers from the fourth-ranked Wolfpack.
 
Formato and Brito both went 2-0, while Julian Gorring, Cody Bond and Carson Smith won their only matches. Jonathan Millner and Heath Gonyer (two pins) went 2-1, and four more wrestlers were 1-1: Thomas Flitz, Mason Fiscella, Caleb Smith and Jackson Boles.
 
Formato and Gorring both followed up dual victories Friday with unblemished records Saturday, as Formato outscored his three NC State opponents over two days, including seventh-ranked Thomas Bullard on Friday, by a combined score of 12-0. Formato won 2-0 and 6-0, respectively, against Tyler Barnes and Donald Cates at 165 pounds on Saturday.
 
Brito had two bonus-point wins Saturday at 141 pounds, earning a 10-1 major decision against Silas Shaw and a second-period pin against Jarred Papcsy.
 
Gorring won a 7-3 decision against Dylen Reinert at 184 pounds, Bond had a first-minute pin against AJ Kovacs at 157 pounds and Carson Smith used a Sudden Victory takedown to win a 9-7 decision against Anthony Noto at 125 pounds.
 
The other dramatic wins for App State wrestlers included Flitz's 3-1 decision via a Sudden Victory takedown against Reinert, Millner overcoming a 4-3 deficit in the third period of a 7-4 decision against AJ Leitten, Brett "Chopper" Mordecai overcoming a 7-0 deficit to win 9-7 with a Sudden Victory-2 takedown of Cates and Boles scoring four third-period points in a 10-6 decision against Reinert.
 
True freshman Tyler Kellison had one four-point near fall and two takedowns before 16th-ranked Jarrett Trombley used a Sudden Victory takedown to win 13-11, and Caleb Smith's 1-1 mark included a loss by a 5-1 decision against seventh-ranked Jakob Camacho.
