CHARLESTON, S.C. – App State used a six spot in the seventh inning to record an 8-4 victory at Charleston Southern on Friday night.
The Mountaineers (6-6) recorded six runs with two outs in the seventh inning to turn a 2-2 tie into a commanding 8-2 lead. App State recorded only one hit in the frame, reaching base nine times behind four walks, three hit by pitches, an error and a single.
After junior
Jack Lipson drew a bases-loaded walk to make it 3-2, sophomore
Andrew Terrell notched a two-out single to extend App State's lead to 5-2. App State scored its final three runs of the inning via a wild pitch, an error on the shortstop and another bases-loaded walk to make it 8-2.
Freshman
Noah Hall registered his second win with 2.1 innings of scoreless relief. The right-hander struck out three batters and lowered his ERA to 2.16 after allowing just one hit and no walks.
After Charleston Southern (7-8) took a 1-0 lead in the second inning, App State jumped ahead with a two-run double from junior
Andrew Greckel. Greckel's two-base knock in the fifth extended his streak with an extra-base hit to six games. The Acworth, Georgia native has reached base safely in all 11 games he's played in this season.
Greckel paced the Mountaineers with three RBIs in Friday's victory. Terrell, who finished with a 2-for-5 day at the plate, recorded a pair of singles and two runs scored after starting in left field.
Junior
Bailey Welch reached base four times, going 3-for-5 with a double, two runs scored and a walk. Welch's leadoff double in the third inning helped him extend his hitting streak to four games.
"It was another great night on the mound," head coach
Kermit Smith said. "Tut, Noah and Cam really threw well tonight. Offensively, we showed some patience in some key situations, but there are a lot of at-bats we'd like to have back. Greck's double really gave us the jolt we needed. Defensively, we were really sloppy. We are going to have to clean up a lot of those things if we want to play at a really high level. It's really hard to win on Friday nights, so I'm proud of our guys for pulling it out. Looking forward to getting back out there tomorrow with these guys."
The Mountaineers will look to secure a series victory over the Bucs on Saturday with left-hander
Quinton Martinez on the mound. First pitch for Saturday's matchup is set for 4 p.m.
